No. 10 Buckeyes Down Spartans, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With two power play goals, four goal scorers and 42 saves from Tommy Nappier, the No. 10-ranked Ohio State men's hockey team defeated Michigan State, 4-2, Sunday in Value City Arena. The win gave the Buckeyes (1-3-0, 1-3-0-0-1-0 B1G) a split with the Spartans (2-1-1, 1-1-0-1-0-0 B1G).
Ohio State has two games at home vs. Wisconsin this week, with puck drop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday in Value City. Game one will be streamed on BTN Plus with the second game televised on ESPNU. Both games will be on Ohio State radio.
Against Michigan State, the Buckeyes opened the scoring on a Quinn Preston power play goal in the first period. The Spartans tied the game at 9:32 of the second but Joe Dunlap regained the Buckeye advantage five minutes later for a 2-1 Ohio State lead after 40 minutes. In the third, the teams traded power play goals at 10:24 and 12:30, with Grant Gabriele tallying for the Buckeyes. Gustaf Westlund sealed the win with an empty net score. Nappier had 42 saves for the Buckeyes, who blocked 17 shots, led by Layton Ahac and Ryan O'Connell with four each. Ohio State was 2-for-5 on the power play in the win. Freshman Travis Treloar had a team-best two assists and Preston added a helper for a two-point night.

"It was important to get up two goals. It's huge. It's hard to score goals. I've told our team from the beginning I think we're built to win the 3-2 games and it's ironic both games this weekend were 3-2. I was disappointed we took the penalty to give them the opportunity to bounce back. But any time you get up by two goals it's huge."

Ohio State vs. Michigan State
In the First … The Buckeyes scored first, when Quinn Preston put in the rebound of a Mark Cheremeta shot on the power play at 13:53. Freshman Travis Treloar had the second assist on the tally, Preston's first of the year. The assist was the first point as a Buckeye for Cheremeta, while it was Treloar's first collegiate assist. Each team had eight shots in the period.
In the Second … Mitchell Mattson tied the game for the Spartans at 9:32, scoring on the rush. At 14:33 the Buckeyes regained the lead. Tate Singleton forced a turnover in the neutral zone, creating a 2-on-1, and he passed to freshman Joe Dunlap who converted for his first collegiate tally. Michigan State had 15 shots in the period, with the Buckeyes putting 11 on net.
In the Third … Ohio State carried its one-goal lead until Grant Gabriele stepped into a puck Treloar dug out from the boards and found the back of the net for a power play goal at 10:24. Preston had the second assist on the tally, which was Gabriele's second goal of the weekend. Just 2:06 later the Spartans drew within one, with Charlie Combs scoring on the power play. Gustaf Westlund sealed the win with an unassisted empty net goal with six seconds remaining. Nappier had 20 saves in the third, as the Buckeyes were outshot, 21-12.
Shots … For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot 44-31. Nappier played 59:57 and had 42 saves, his second game with 42 stops this weekend. Drew DeRidder had 27 saves in 58:31 for the Spartans.
The Buckeyes blocked 17 shots in the win, with Layton Ahac and Ryan O'Connell each blocking four and Austin Pooley blocking two.
Special Teams … Ohio State was 2-for-5 on the power play, its first power play goals of the season. The penalty kill was 3-for-4.
