COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nearing the end of the regular season, Ohio State men’s epee is heating up for a promising postseason run. The squad leads both sides of Ohio State fencing in bouts competed and bouts won. They have secured victories in 222 of the 322 bouts thus far. Collectively, they have competed in 19 more bouts than the next closest squad, men’s sabre.
As the fifth-ranked team in the recent CollegeFencing360 coaches poll, Ohio State upset the four teams above them – No. 1 Columbia, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 3 Harvard and No. 4 Penn State – at the St. John’s Invitational and Philadelphia Invitational earlier this month.
Leading the epee squad is sophomore Henry Lange, who already has 76 bouts and 55 wins under his belt this season. Following closely behind is junior Matthew Comes with 63 bouts and newcomer Bence Bende with 60. Bende, a Hungary native, follows Lange with 47 wins and holds the team-high winning percentage of 78%.
