OSU Open and Duals to Begin 2019-20 Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2019-2020 Ohio State fencing squad kicks off its season with the OSU Open and Duals this weekend at French Field House. The OSU Open will take place Saturday featuring individual competition. The women’s competition will start at 9 a.m. and the men’s at 12:30 p.m. The OSU Duals will feature team competition beginning promptly at 8 a.m. Sunday. Competition is set to end about 6 p.m. on both days.
Admission on both days is free. Spectators are permitted to bring in food and drinks as concessions will not be open. Saturday, guests can park for free in the west portion of the South French Field House lot, in the lot north of FFH and in the St. John Arena lot. Parking is free around the facility on Sunday.
Who’s Coming?
There will be 13 teams in attendance this weekend, including varsity and club teams from Bowling Green, Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State, Denison, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Oberlin, Purdue and Xavier.
Last Year
A year ago, the Ohio State squad dominated the competition both days in French Field House. At the Open, 20 individual fencers earned Top 10 finishes in their respective disciplines and Ohio State took first in all but one weapon category. The team swept the Dual with an 8-0 record to win the tournament for the second year in a row. The men’s squad finished 197-9 and the women’s squad finished 188-28.
Alexanne Verret, Matthew Comes, Leon Cao, Jacob Gordon, Roscoe Swartz, Gabriela Cecchini, and Aleksandra Kolmykova all went undefeated. Of this group, Verrete, Cao, Kolmykova, and Swartz took home gold.
