COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team started the 2019 season undefeated with three wins at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Buckeyes swept a solid Seton Hall team behind strong performances from a young pitching staff. See below for some notes from the Snowbird Classic.
The Buckeyes are set to play at FGCU at 5 p.m. Monday at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla., to wrap up the first weekend of play. Live stats will be available on the Ohio State baseball schedule page. FGCU will be broadcasted the game on Facebook Live.
OPENING WEEKEND QUICK HITS
- The Buckeyes started the year 3-0 for the first time since the 2016 campaign.
- Ohio State went undefeated at the Snowbird Classic for the third time (2015, 2017 & 2019). The Buckeyes are 24-10 all-time at the Snowbird Classic.
- The team batted .270 with seven doubles, four home runs and walked 14 times. The OSU bats scored first in each game vs. Seton Hall.
- The OSU pitching staff was dominant over opening weekend, limiting the Pirates to six runs in three games. The staff combined to strike out 25 hitters and only walk three.
- The OSU starting pitchers each tossed a quality start, combing to throw 19.0 IP with 21 strikeouts.
- Four Buckeye pitchers made their collegiate debuts (Seth Lonsway, Garrett Burhenn, Mitch Milheim and Will Pfennig).
- Lonsway had a team-high nine strikeouts in six innings of work on Friday in the win on Opening Day. Burhenn was dominant in his debut allowing only one hit in eight innings pitched with six strikeouts and no walks. He faced the minimum in the victory. Jake Vance sealed the sweep with a quality start on Sunday, tying his career high with six strikeouts.
- Griffan Smith and Thomas Waning each earned their first saves of the year.
- At the dish, Dominic Canzone started his junior campaign in strong fashion with a .444 clip and two home runs with four RBI and four runs scored. Conner Pohl also drove in four runs with a .300 average. Brady Cherry tallied three extra-base hits (2 2B, 1 HR) and Noah West had two extra-base knocks (1 2B, 1 HR).
- Four Buckeye position players made their OSU debuts at the Snowbird (Brent Todys, Zach Dezenzo, Marcus Ernst and Nolan Clegg). Todys, Dezenzo and Ernst each claimed their first hits as Buckeyes over the weekend.
