Explosive Second Quarter Slays Spartans

J.K. Dobbins rushed for 172 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown to lead Ohio State (6-0, 3-0) to a 34-10 win over Michigan State (4-2, 2-1) Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Justin Fields threw for a pair of scores and rushed for another from the quarterback position. Fields finished 17-25 through the air for 206 yards and covered 61 yards on the ground on 11 carries.
Seven receivers caught passes for the Buckeyes with K.J. Hill leading the way with 57 yards on seven grabs. Binjimen Victor had the long reception of the game, a 60-yarder for a score. Tight end Luke Farrell had a 21-yard grab for a touchdown as well.
Defensively, Ohio State forced two fumbles, recorded a fourth-quarter interception and was led by Jordan Fuller with seven total tackles, five of which were solo stops.
The Buckeyes totaled 529 yards in total offense with 323 coming on the ground. The Spartans managed 285 yards, 67 rushing.
The Buckeyes are off next Saturday and will return to action Friday Oct. 18 at Northwestern (8:30 p.m.ET/FS1).
Michigan State turned the ball over twice deep in its own territory with the Buckeyes capitalizing once for a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes.
On the Spartans’ first possession, Damon Arnette forced an MSU fumble at the Michigan State 45 that was recovered by Malik Harrison and returned to the MSU 27. The Buckeyes drove to the 20 but a 37-yard field goal attempt by Ohio State’s Blake Haubeil missed right.
After the Spartans took over on their 20, MSU ran two plays before turning it over again on a fumbled pitch. Ohio State took over on the Spartan 22 but was not able to move the ball and this time a 39-yard Haubeil field goal attempt split the uprights to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead with 8:04 left in the quarter.

In a back-and-forth second quarter, Ohio State took a 27-10 lead into the lockerroom at the half.
Justin Fields threw to a wide open Victor for a 60-yard touchdown pass with 12:12 left in the first half to give the Buckeyes a 10-0 lead. Ohio State drove 86 yards on five plays for the first touchdown of the game for either team.
The Spartans answered on their next possession with a 75-yard drive that culminated with a 20-yard TD pass with 10:36 remaining to cut Ohio State’s lead to 10-7. Aided by a 35-yard run by Fields and then a 21-yard touchdown pass from Fields to Luke Farrell, the Buckeyes went 75 yards on seven plays to retake a 10-point lead, 17-7 with 8:09 left.
Michigan State booted a 39-yard field goal on its next possession to make it 17-10 Buckeyes with 3:36 on the clock. Dobbins wasted little time in getting the Buckeyes back to the endzone with a 67-yard run on the third play of Ohio State’s next drive to give Ohio State a 24-10 lead.
Michigan State was forced to punt on its next possession. The Buckeyes took over on their 29 and with 1:46 left in the half started a 10-play, 45-yard drive that resulted in a 43-yard field goal by Haubeil to give the Buckeyes a 27-10 lead at the break.
Fields ended the half 12 of 17 passing for 149 yards and two scores. He also rushed for 37 yards on seven carries. Dobbins carried the ball 16 times for 126 yards and one touchdown.

After a combined three-point first quarter and a 34-point second, neither team put points on the board in the third.
The closest either team came to scoring was when the Spartans took the opening kickoff of the second half 66 yards to the Ohio State 9-yard line but missed a 27-yard field goal attempt wide left.
The Buckeyes ended 45 minutes of action leading 27-10.
