
Ohio State Returns to Columbus to Face Maryland

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team returns to the Covelli Center and opens a three-match homestand Saturday when it hosts Maryland at 7 p.m.

HISTORY WITH THE TERRAPINS
Ohio State owns an 11-5 lead in the all-time series against Maryland, which began in 1978. Saturday’s match will be the second time the two teams have battled this season. The Buckeyes opened their Big Ten slate with a 3-1 victory over the Terps on Sept. 25. Elle Sandbothe had the hot hand as she tallied a career-high 14 kills, hit .611 and had four blocks. Adria Powell notched a season-best 12 kills, three digs, two service aces and a block. Becca Mauer and Mac Podraza shared the setting duties with 23 and 20 assists, respectively. Kylie Murr turned in a match-high 18 digs.
SCOUTING REPORT
Maryland (12-11, 4-7 B1G) came up short in straight sets at No. 4 Wisconsin on Wednesday. The Terps are ninth in the country and lead the Big Ten with 233 total blocks. The squad also ranks 22nd in total services aces (149). Middle blocker Katie Myers ranks in the Top 20 nationally in multiple categories behind 129 blocks (4th), a .429 hitting percentage (10th) and 1.36 blocks per set (20th).
LAST TIME OUT
Ohio State (11-12, 4-7 B1G) dropped a five-set heartbreaker at No. 6 Minnesota Wednesday. Gabby Gonzales had a career night across the board with 22.5 points, 20 kills, 16 digs, four assists and two service aces. Jenaisya Moore tallied 14 kills and four digs while Elle Sandbothe recorded 12 kills and six blocks, which tied her career high. Mac Podraza matched her career best on five kills and registered 21 assists, two digs and a block. Becca Mauer added 27 assists and dug nine balls while Kylie Murr chipped in 22 digs and six assists.
CAREER WATCH
Setter Becca Mauer has appeared in 73 matches for Ohio State and recorded 1,379 assists during that time to rank 14th all-time in program history. Her 6.10 assists per set is 15th among the Buckeyes’ career leaders. Middle blocker Lauren Witte has 83 matches under her belt and stands among some of the best in Ohio State history. She currently has 43 solo blocks (t-18th), 217 block assists (20th) and 260 total blocks (20th).
BY THE NUMBERS
Ohio State averages 13.50 kills per set to sit at No. 49 in the national rankings, paced by Jenaisya Moore at 3.53 kills per set. Kylie Murr leads the Big Ten and is 30th in the country behind 4.98 digs per set. Becca Mauer (7.97) and Mac Podraza (7.02) have split setting duties as of late. At the net, 10 Buckeyes have double-digit blocks – Lauren Witte (58), Elle Sandbothe (58), Mac Podraza (32), Jordan Fry (32), Moore (22), Adria Powell (19), Mia Grunze (18), Gabby Gonzales (15), Mauer (12) and Vanja Bukilic (10).
B1G STATS
In Big Ten matches only, Gabby Gonzales (3.48) and Jenaisya Moore (3.17) rank seventh and 10th, respectively, in kills per set. Kylie Murr’s 4.63 digs per set checks in at No. 1 while Becca Mauer’s 8.55 assists per set stands ninth. As a team, Ohio State is second in the league with 15.13 digs per set.
RPI STANDINGS
Ohio State is currently No. 50 is the latest NCAA RPI rankings released on Monday, Oct. 28. The Buckeyes join nine other Big Ten volleyball teams ranked in the top 60 of the NCAA RPI – No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 9 Minnesota, No. 12 Penn State, No. 18 Purdue, No. 36 Illinois, No. 40 Michigan, No. 53 Michigan State and No. 58 Iowa.
