Starting Five
• The Buckeyes are 1,148-415 all-time when playing in the state of Ohio (.734) … Against Ohio teams, Ohio State is 235-79 (.748) all-time, regardless of location. The Buckeyes face a pair of intrastate foes this season. Ohio State opens with Cincinnati Nov. 6 at Value City Arena (8:30 p.m./FS1) and Kent State Nov. 25 at St. John Arena (6:30 p.m./BTN). Ohio State is 177-30 vs. Ohio teams in Columbus (.855).
• Three current Buckeyes were named Mr. Basketball in their respective states. Junior Kaleb Wesson was named Ohio Mr. Basketball as a senior at Westerville South High School … freshman D.J. Carton was named Mr. Basketball in Iowa in 2019 as a senior at Bettendorf High School and freshman E.J. Liddell was named Illinois Mr. Basketball in both 2018 and 2019 after leading Belleville High School to back-to-back state titles.
• Andre and Kaleb Wesson are one of 16 sets of brothers playing in NCAA Division I this season and one of three sets in the Big Ten. Iowa (McCaffery) and Maryland (Mitchell) also have siblings on the roster.
• Ohio State has 58 players all-time with 1,000 or more career points, the ninth most nationally and the most of any Big Ten school (research credit: Duke). Kaleb Wesson is the next Buckeye on schedule to reach the milestone with 806 career points over his career.
• There were a couple support staff changes during the offseason for the Buckeyes with the departure of Scoonie Penn, director of player development, and Jeff Deits, men’s basketball athletic trainer. Both Penn and Deits left for the National Basketball Association’s Memphis Grizzlies. Penn accepted an assistant coach position and Deits will be the head athletic trainer. Terence Dials will be the director of professional development in place of Penn. The athletic trainer position with the Buckeyes is in the process of being filled.
Kaleb Wesson On Preseason Honors Lists
Junior Kaleb Wesson was tabbed a member of the 2019-20 Preseason All-Big Ten squad by conference media Oct. 2. He was one of three unanimous selections on the squad of 10 league players. Wesson also was listed as one of 20 preseason candidates for the Karl Malone Award, given annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to the best power forward in the country. Wesson, listed as a center with the Buckeyes, could play his way on to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award list for the country’s best center when the award lists are reduced to 10 in mid-February and to five in March.
Buckeyes Face Daunting Schedule
The No. 18 Buckeyes face several Associated Press Top 10 teams during the 2019-20 season. Preseason No. 1 Michigan State takes on Ohio State in the final regular-season game of the year for both teams in East Lansing March 8 (4:30 p.m./CBS). No. 2 Kentucky and the Buckeyes travel to Las Vegas Dec. 21 for a 5:15 p.m. game in the CBSSports Classic. No. 7 Maryland and the Buckeyes play both in Columbus Feb. 23 and in College Park Jan. 7. Ohio State travels to No. 9 North Carolina Dec. 4 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after No. 10 Villanova visits Columbus Nov. 13 for a Gavitt Games contest. No. 23 Purdue rounds out the Top 25 competition for the Buckeyes when the Boilermakers make a Jan. 15 appearance at Value City Arena. Illinois, Cincinnati and Michigan also are receiving preseason votes for Top 25 consideration.
Dials Returns to Ohio State Sidelines
Terence Dials, the 2006 Big Ten Player of the Year and 2015 inductee into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame, was named the director of professional development with the men’s basketball program, Chris Holtmann, head coach of the Buckeyes, announced Sept. 4. His duties will primarily include providing and arranging professional development and community service opportunities for the Buckeyes. Dials will work with the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute to arrange internships, mentors, job fairs and other personal and career growth initiatives for student-athletes. He also will provide academic support, oversight and mentoring.
Buckeyes Earn NABC Academic Honor, Lane Named B1G Distinguished Scholar
The National Association of Basketball Coaches named the 2018-19 Buckeyes a winner of the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award after the squad posted a team GPA of 3.03 last year. It marks the second-consecutive year Chris Holtmann’s team has earned the honor.
Cincinnati Game Second Earliest Opener in Ohio State History
When Ohio State tips vs. Cincinnati in the 2019-20 opener, the game will be the second earliest opening date in Ohio State history. The Nov. 6 date with the Bearcats in Columbus is second only to the Nov. 5, 2004 opener, the first game of the Thad Matta era, vs. Towson State in the Guardian’s Classic at Value City Arena. Ohio State won that game 74-53.
Ohio State Travels to Chapel Hill for
Big Ten/ACC Challenge
No. 9 North Carolina will host the Buckeyes in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Chapel Hill Dec. 4. Ohio State last played in the Dean Smith Center Nov. 29, 2006, a 98-96 win for the No. 7 Tar Heels vs. the No. 3 Buckeyes. Ohio State went on to play for the NCAA title that season behind Greg Oden, Mike Conley Jr., and Daequan Cook. All three were drafted in the first round of the NBA draft in 2007 with Oden going No. 1 overall to Portland.
Villanova Announced as Gavitt Games Foe
The No. 10 Villanova Wildcats will travel to Columbus for a Nov. 13 game vs. the Buckeyes in the 2019 Gavitt Games, a series which features Big Ten and Big East foes in honor of the late Dave Gavitt, a pioneer from the Big East. Ohio State is 2-1 vs. the Wildcats all-time.
Matta Enters Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame
Thad Matta, the all-time winningest coach in Ohio State history, was selected to enter the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame during a ceremony Sept. 6. The 13th coach in program history, Matta recorded 337 career wins, made nine NCAA Tournament appearances, five “Sweet Sixteens,” three “Elite Eights” and two Final Fours over 13 seasons (2005-17).
Kaleb Wesson Tests NBA Waters, Returns for Junior Year
Kaleb Wesson elected to enter his name into the 2019 NBA Draft process to gain feedback into his goal of becoming a professional basketball player. After going through the process he elected to return to Ohio State for his junior year. Wesson made the decision in late May.
Sueing Selects Ohio State, Eligible in 2020-21
Justice Sueing joined the Ohio State program in May of 2019 following a transfer from the University of California. Sueing, a 6-foot, 6-inch forward from Honolulu, Hawaii, will have two years of eligibility with the Buckeyes after sitting out the 2019-20 campaign to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. Sueing played 31 games for the Golden Bears a season ago. He averaged 14.3 points and 6.0 rebounds while shooting better than 78 percent from the foul line (129-165).
Diebler Added to Coaching Staff
Jake Diebler, who spent three seasons with the Buckeyes as the team’s video coordinator (2014-2016) was hired as an assistant coach with the Buckeyes after spending the last two years as an assistant at Vanderbilt. Diebler, older brother of Ohio State great Jon Diebler, is a 2009 graduate of Valparaiso. He was a standout high school player at Upper Sandusky (Ohio).
Diallo Picks Ohio State
Ibrahima Diallo, a 6-foot, 10-inch center from Senegal, signed a letter of intent to play for Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes in mid-April 2019. Diallo enters the 2019-20 season along with a stellar freshman class. He joins forwards Alonzo Gaffney and E.J. Liddell and guard D.J. Carton. Diallo played a season ago at Prolific Prep in California where he averaged 11 points, 11 rebounds and nearly four blocks a game.
Buckeyes Enter 2019-20 Campaign with 20+ Wins in 14 of the Last 15 Seasons
Ohio State has 29 seasons with 20 or more wins and three with 30 or more. Holtmann has won at least 20 games in each of his two years at Ohio State and the Buckeyes have won 20 or more in 14 of the last 15 seasons.
Buckeyes, West Virginia to Meet in December
Ohio State and West Virginia will play Dec. 29 at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio. The Buckeyes and Mountaineers have played 16 times previously with Ohio State owning the series lead 9-7. Tickets for the event are available at www.rocketmortgagefieldhouse.com.

• Luther Muhammad played 905 (26.6 mpg.) minutes as a freshman a year ago … he totaled 92 rebounds and 258 points.

Noting the 2019-20 Ohio State Schedule
• Ohio State will play its first seven games of the season, plus an exhibition, at home with six at Value City Arena and one at St. John Arena. Three of the four non-Big Ten games in December will be played outside Columbus (vs. North Carolina in Big Ten/ACC Challenge, vs. Kentucky in CBSSports Classic (Las Vegas) and vs. West Virginia in Cleveland Classic).
• The Buckeyes again will take part in the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Ohio State travels to North Carolina this year Dec. 4.
• Now in its sixth year, Ohio State will again play in the CBSSports Classic. The event will take place in Las Vegas this season Dec. 21. The Buckeyes take on Kentucky while North Carolina and UCLA play in the second game.
• Villanova will travel to Ohio State Nov. 13. The game is part of The Gavitt Games, which pits members of the Big Ten vs. Big East opponents.
• Two Big Ten Conference games will be played in early December after the league expanding to a 20-game, regular-season slate in 2018-19. Ohio State will play Penn State in Columbus Dec. 7 and travel to Minnesota Dec. 15.
• The annual Big Ten Tournament will be contested in Indianapolis in 2020, Chicago in 2021 and then back to Indianapolis in 2022.
• The Buckeyes will have 18 home games in 2018-19 plus an exhibition contest vs. Cedarville Oct. 30.
• Seven Big Ten teams (Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Penn State, Maryland, Wisconsin and Nebraska) battle the Buckeyes twice during the regular season with three (Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers) traveling only to Columbus. Ohio State hits the road to face Iowa, Michigan State and Northwestern this year.
• Two Big Ten Conference games will be played in December. Ohio State faces Penn State at home Dec. 7 and then travels to Minnesota Dec. 15. The Buckeyes are 4-0 in December conference games the last two years with wins at Wisconsin and vs. Michigan in 2017 and victories over Minnesota in Columbus and Illinois in Chicago in 2018.
• Ohio State will play 19 regular-season games against 13 teams that advanced to postseason play in 2019. Fifteen games are scheduled vs. 2019 NCAA Tournament teams (Maryland-2, Minnesota-2, Michigan State-1, Michigan-2, Wisconsin-2, Villanova-1, Purdue-1, Cincinnati-1, Iowa-1, Kentucky-1, North Carolina-1) while four contests pit the Buckeyes vs. 2019 NIT squads (Indiana-2, Nebraska-2).
• Every Ohio State game will be televised or streamed. CBS will feature the Buckeyes five times, FOX/FS1 will carry eight OSU games, ESPN Networks will broadcast nine games with BTN showing 10 games, which includes two BTN+ (Cedarville and Purdue Fort Wayne) games.
108 Years in Big Ten
Ohio State celebrated 108 years as a member of the Big Ten Conference in men’s basketball in 2020. The Buckeyes finished in the No. 6 spot in the 1913 conference standings, the first season of league play. Over 108 seasons, Ohio State has earned 20 Big Ten regular-season titles with 29 NCAA Tournament appearances, one national championship (1960) and 10 trips to the Final Four. Ten former coaches and players are members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame while 55 student-athletes have been drafted by National Basketball Association teams, including 24 in the first round.
CBS Sports Classic-Year 6
CBS Sports has brought together four of the nation’s most prestigious college basketball teams the last four years and will do so again this year in 2019-20. Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and UCLA, meet for a college basketball showcase, the CBSSPORTS CLASSIC again this season. CBS Sports televises the doubleheader and has done so since the first year of the event in Chicago (2014). These four schools have combined to win 26 national championships and are among the winningest college basketball programs of all-time. The event debuted at the United Center in Chicago Dec. 20, 2014. North Carolina faced Ohio State and UCLA took on Kentucky. The CBSSPORTS CLASSIC moved to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Dec. 19, 2015, where the Buckeyes knocked off No. 4 Kentucky 74-67. The teams traveled to Las Vegas in 2016 where the Buckeyes fell to UCLA. Ohio State took on North Carolina Dec. 23, 2017 in New Orleans (L, 86-72). The Buckeyes defeated UCLA Dec. 22, 2018 of this year at the United Center in Chicago. The Buckeyes meet Kentucky this year in Las Vegas (Dec. 21/5:15 p.m./CBS).
Wesson Brothers = Difference Makers
Senior Andre Wesson along with junior sibling Kaleb Wesson were significant weapons for Chris Holtmann’s second edition of Ohio State basketball in 2018-19. The brothers helped the Buckeyes to a 25-9 record in 2017-18 with Kaleb earning Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors after averaging 10.2 points and 4.9 rebounds. Andre started five games and appeared in 34 as a sophomore. Kaleb led the Buckeyes in scoring as a sophomore with 14.6 points and 6.9 rebounds while Andre averaged 8.6 points and 4.1 boards over his junior season.

Holtmann Era in Columbus
June 9, 2017 marked the first day of the Chris Holtmann era at Ohio State. After six seasons as a head coach, including three at Butler, Holtmann became the 14th head coach in Ohio State men’s basketball history. In his young career to date, Holtmann already has earned coach-of-the-year honors in the Big South Conference (2013), where he spent three seasons coaching Gardner-Webb (2001-13), and in the Big East (2017) in the final of three seasons with the Bulldogs. His first game in Columbus, a win over Robert Morris, was the 200th of his head coaching career. Holtmann was named the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year, has won at least 20 games in each of his two seasons in Columbus, has taken the Buckeyes to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances and has won an NCAA game each season.

Ohio Mr. Basketball at Ohio State
Junior Kaleb Wesson, a 6-9 center from nearby Westerville, Ohio, was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Ohio following his senior year at Westerville South High School in 2017. Wesson earned the 12th Ohio Mr. Basketball award among nine players to sign with the Buckeyes out of high school and the 13th among those to ultimately play for Ohio State. Tony Stockman earned the honor in 2000 but elected to start his career at Clemson. He later transferred to Ohio State and played in Columbus in 2004 and 2005.

Throwback Game at St. John Arena
Ohio State plays Kent State as part of the 2019 Ohio State Classic at historic St. John Arena Nov. 25.
A few notes on the venue:
• Ohio State first played at St. John Arena during the 1956-57 season. The last season the Buckeyes called SJA their home was 1997-98. Ohio State began playing at its current home, Value City Arena, in 1998-99.
• Ohio State has an overall record of 432-151 (.741) at SJA, which includes a 6-0 record in games played at SJA since the end of the 1998 season.
• The Buckeyes had last played at SJA in 2010, an 85-60 win over Western Carolina (12/12/2010).
• The facility is named after former Ohio State director of athletics and men’s basketball coach L.W. St. John.
• The first game played at SJA was against Butler (12/1/1956), a 98-82 win for the Buckeyes.
• Capacity is 13,276. The CSU game was a sellout.
• Since the Ohio State men’s and women’s basketball teams moved to Value City Arena, St. John has been the competition home for the men’s and women’s volleyball, wrestling, fencing and men’s and women’s gymnastics teams. Those team moved out of SJA and into the Covelli Center on Ohio State’s campus following the 2018-19 season.
• SJA also is filled to capacity prior to each home football game during “Skull Session” where the Ohio State Marching Band practices and briefly welcomes the football Buckeyes on their way to Ohio Stadium.
• Between 1960 and 1964, the Buckeyes won 50-consecutive games on their home floor.
Ohio State in Ohio-Cincinnati Opener
Ohio State opened the 2018-19 season officially Nov. 7, 2018 at Cincinnati, the first meeting against the Bearcats on either team’s campus since 1921 (Columbus/L, 33-17/Dec. 10, 1921) and the first time at Cincinnati since the 1920 season (Cincinnati/W, 35-13/Jan. 3, 1920). Ohio State is 7-4 all-time vs. the Bearcats after a hard-fought 64-56 win last year. Three of the last five meetings have come in the NCAA Tournament. Cincinnati defeated the Buckeyes for the national championship in both 1961 and 1962. Ohio State defeated UC in the 2006 Wooden Tradition in Indianapolis (72-50) and then in the 2012 NCAA East Regional Semifinals in Boston (81-66).

• Ohio State improved its record to 235-79 versus teams from Ohio with the 75-56 win over Youngstown State Dec. 18.
• Chris Holtmann has a 9-5 career record versus teams from Ohio.

Six Seasons with 20 Wins for Holtmann
Holtmann teams have won 20 or more games in each of his last six full years as a head coach. Ohio State finished 20-15 overall after the win vs. Iowa State and the loss to Houston in the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Gardner-Webb won 21 games in 2013 with Holtmann at the helm. Butler reached 23, 22 and 25 wins over the three seasons before Holtmann took over at Ohio State in 2017-18. Of Ohio State’s 14 head coaches in the history of men’s basketball, only Gary Williams and Thad Matta won 20 games in their first season in Columbus. The Buckeyes were 25-9 in 2017-18. Williams was 20-13 in 1987 and took the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament, where the team defeated Kentucky for its 20th win of the season before losing to Georgetown. Matta was 20-12 in 2005 but the Buckeyes were ineligible for postseason competition that year. The Buckeyes won their 20th game in the Big Ten Tournament over Penn State before ending the season with a loss to Wisconsin. Holtmann is the first Ohio State coach in history to win 20 regular-season games in his first year in Columbus. The 25 wins in 2017-18 is an Ohio State record for most wins by a first-year coach.
Ohio State’s 29 20-Win Seasons
The win over Iowa State in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament gave the Buckeyes win No. 20 for the 2018-19 season. The feat marked the 29th time in Ohio State men’s basketball history the Buckeyes reached 20 victories in a season. The first was in 1950 when William H.H. Dye led the Buckeyes to a 22-4 record in his final of four seasons on the Ohio State sidelines. Fred Taylor was the next coach in Columbus to guide Ohio State to the 20-win plateau with a 25-3 season in 1960, the year the Buckeyes reached and won the NCAA title game. Taylor led Ohio State to six 20-win seasons in his career, including a streak of four-consecutive from 1960-1963. Taylor’s last 20-win campaign was in 1971. Eldon Miller led Ohio State to four 20-win campaigns from 1980-85 before Gary Williams coached two seasons with 20-13 records in 1987 and 1988. Randy Ayers’s 1991 and 1992 seasons both ended with 20 or more wins with 27 and 26 respectively. The Thad Matta era (2005-2017) included 12-consecutive 20-win seasons from 2005-2016. Chris Holtmann has reached 20-plus wins in each of his seasons in Columbus to give the Buckeyes a total of 29 in Ohio State history.
