COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team picked up its third-consecutive win with a 2-0 victory over Iowa Thursday night at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-4-0 overall, 3-1-0 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes drop to 5-5-2, 1-3-1 in conference play.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH
“It was fantastic to be back playing at home,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “The team had really strong energy from the first whistle. Our defending was consistent from front to back and we moved the ball well in possession. Games at this time of year are so often decided by set pieces and this was no exception.”
MATCH SUMMARY
– The Buckeyes controlled possession throughout the first half but neither team was able to create many quality opportunities. Late in the half, Eleanor Gabriel made a run down the right wing and played a cross to Lexxe Lipsey but her shot from eight yards was blocked by an Iowa defender. Then on another trip down, Lipsey looked to be tripped up in the box but it was not called. The possession led to a left-footed strike by Talani Barnett from 15 yards but that flew wide left.
– In the 58th minute, Blair Cowan took the ball away from a Hawkeye and ripped a right-footed shot from 20 yards on the right wing but it narrowly missed wide left.
– Six minutes later, Iowa had a chance when Kaleigh Haus curled in a left-footed shot towards the left post but Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr was there to dive to her right to make the save.
– Ohio State then took the lead in the 71st minute when Izzy Rodriguez played an inswinging corner from the right wing toward the head of Talani Barnett, who deflected it inside the left post for the 1-0 Buckeye advantage.

– On the ensuing trip down the field for the Hawkeyes, Rose Ripslinger possessed inside the box on the left wing but Kerr was there again to make the save on the shot from eight yards.
– The Buckeyes then doubled their lead in the 83rd minute. After Gabriel was taken down just inside the right side of the box, Rodriguez converted the penalty kick inside the left post for the 2-0 advantage.
