COLUMBUS, Ohio – Olivia Aepli and Jamie Stone have been named captains of the 2019 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team, head coach Meredith Paulicivic announced on Tuesday. In addition, Morgan Lowe will serve as the underclassmen liaison.
“This year’s captains have proven themselves both on and off of the competitive floor,” Paulicivic said. “Their passion and enthusiasm for this sport and university are going to take this team to an awesome place!”
Stone, a native of Chesapeake, Va., enters her senior year as the defending Big Ten vault champion after hitting a career-high 9.900 at the event. She later matched that score on vault at the NCAA Columbus Regional, tying for first place and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Stone also achieved a career-best on floor exercise (9.950) and balance beam (9.925), and boasted 15 podium finishes throughout the season. Stone was named to the All-Big Ten Championship team for her efforts, and is a two-time Second Team All-Big Ten honoree. Majoring in psychology, Stone is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
“I feel very humbled and blessed to be named captain of such an amazing team,” Stone said. “Leadership is very important in our sport and I am very confident that by leading this team with consistency and a positive mindset, we will undoubtedly conquer our goals!”
Aepli, from Dublin, Ohio, is a rising junior on the squad and a 2018 Big Ten Champion on the uneven bars, scoring a career-high 9.950 mark to win the title. Aepli claimed nine podium finishes, competing in every meet for the Buckeyes during the 2018 season. She also posted career-bests on vault (9.900) and floor exercise (9.900). Aepli was a second team All-Big Ten selection and member of the All-Big Ten Championship Team. Majoring in marketing, Aepli is a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
“I am so honored and excited to be named captain of this incredible team that I love so much!” Aepli said. “I absolutely cannot wait to play a part in leading this team to the many successes that we’re going to have.”
Sophomore Morgan Lowe was named the team’s underclassmen liaison, and will assist the captains with the eleven underclassmen for the 2019 season. Lowe competed in every meet as a freshman and earned a podium finish on six occasions.
“She will have a pulse on what’s going on with the younger athletes and will be a vital part of our leadership team,” Paulicivic added.
The Ohio State women’s gymnastics schedule will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
