COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team wowed Buckeye fans with a sneak peek of the 2019 routines at the Scarlet and Gray intrasquad meet on Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena.
“I’m really happy with their performance,” Ohio State head coach Meredith Paulicivic said “This is a really young team. We’ve been practicing these kinds of scenarios for a while, and it’s been up and down. Today was a really good day. What I was most happy about was the fact that they helped each other. They had good energy. They were relaxed and having fun, and if we can maintain that throughout the season, this team could do pretty well.”
The team started out on bars and vault as a combined squad and then split up into Scarlet and Gray teams for floor and beam. The Buckeyes were judged by wrestling head coach Tom Ryan, field hockey head coach Jarred Martin, sports nutritionist Nicole Jontony and strength and conditioning coach Kevin Enchelmeyer.
Freshmen gymnasts Claire Gagliardi, Colby Miller, Miriam Perez and Kaitlyn Gilson competed for the first time in the Scarlet and Gray, showing poise and confidence already in their young Buckeye careers.
“I thought they handled it really well,” Paulicivic said of the rookies. “There are more gamers in that class than I thought there were, so that helps me to understand that I may have more options than I thought I did. I’m pretty excited about today.”
The top vault performance of the meet went to sophomore Morgan Lowe. Sophomore Jenna Swartzentruber impressed on bars, and redshirt junior Amanda Huang performed outstanding on beam. Senior Jamie Stone was the favorite on floor, ending the meet on a high note.
“We’re a little banged up right now,” Paulicivic added. “I rested Olivia Aepli, who is one of my strongest, and Sydney Jennings, another freshman who is a really strong kid for me. We had a couple of other kids with a couple of little things today, so we need to clean up some stuff. We need to get healthy and rest our bodies. We’ll get a few more numbers in, and then they need to go home, relax with their families and come back ready to go for Georgia.”
The Buckeyes begin the regular season on Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. against No. 7 Georgia in Athens, Ga.
