Buckeyes Claim The Game, B1G East Crown

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (11-1, 8-1 Big Ten) clinched a spot in the Big Ten Championship game with a 62-39 rout of Michigan (10-2, 8-1 Big Ten) on Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
Dwayne Haskins threw for 318 yards and five touchdowns en route to breaking a pair of Big Ten single season records. He passed the previous record of 39 touchdowns in a season, held by Drew Brees, and 3,985 passing yards, held by Curtis Painter. Haskins has 41 touchdowns and 4,003 passing yards.
Michigan cut the OSU lead to 16 in the fourth, but 14 unanswered points from the Buckeyes helped Ohio State cruise to victory.
Ohio State travels to Indianapolis next weekend for a clash with Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship game. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Fox.

First Quarter
Ohio State 7, Michigan 3
Dwayne Haskins Jr. connected with Chris Olave for a 24-yard touchdown pass to put the Buckeyes up 7-0 at the 11:29 mark of the first quarter. The drive, the first of the game for the Buckeyes, covered 57 yards on six plays after Michigan was forced to punt on its first possession.
Olave’s scoring grab was his first career touchdown. Haskins completed three of four tosses in the drive while also running for 9 yards on Ohio State’s first play from scrimmage.
Michigan got on the board at the 10:10 mark with a 39-yard field goal by Jake Moody. The drive covered 44 yards on 10 plays and ate up five minutes of game clock.
Second Quarter
Ohio State 24, Michigan 19
Michigan scored its second field goal of the game, this time a 31-yarder, early in the second quarter to get within one point of the Buckeyes with 14:51 on the clock. The scoring drive covered 52 yards on 12 plays and used 5:41 making the score 7-6 Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes punted on their next possession giving the Wolverines the ball on the 50.
The Wolverines were forced to punt after being called for a false start on fourth-and two on the Ohio State 47. The Buckeyes took control on their 20 after a touchback.
Haskins then guided the Buckeyes on an 80-yard scoring drive which culminated with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Olave on the ninth play of the drive. The score gave the Buckeyes a 14-6 lead with 9:08 to go in the half.

Michigan again was stopped by the Buckeyes on their next possession. Michigan punted and the Buckeyes started from their 21 with 7:12 left in the half.
The Buckeyes took advantage of the change of possession by scoring on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Haskins to Johnnie Dixon with 3:18 to play giving the Buckeyes a 21-6 lead. The drive covered 79 yards on eight plays.
Michigan countered with 23-yard touchdown catch by Nico Collins cutting Ohio State’s lead to 21-13 with 47 seconds left in the half. The drive covered 79 yards on eight plays over 2:27.
The Wolverines got the ball right back on the ensuing kickoff after an Ohio State fumble gave Michigan the ball on the Ohio State 9. The Wolverines then scored on their first play on a 9-yard touchdown pass. U-M went for the two-point conversion but failed making the score 21-19 Buckeyes.
Ohio State then went the length of the field in 41 seconds on seven plays to kick a field goal to increase its lead to 24-19 at the break. The field goal was a 19-yarder by Blake Haubeil.
Of note: The 24 points scored by Ohio State matches the most allowed in a game by Michigan this season. Notre Dame scored 24 in its season-opening, 24-17, win over the Wolverines.
Third Quarter
Ohio State 41, Michigan 19
On its second drive of the half, Ohio State scored in a 19-yard field goal to go up 27-19 with 8:25 to play in the quarter. The drive covered 56 yards on nine plays over 3:45. It was the second field goal of the game for Haubeil.
Michigan ran out of bounds at its 8-yard line on the ensuing kickoff and drove to the 36 before the Ohio State defense forced a punt. The Buckeyes blocked the punt (Olave) and it was recovered by Sevyn Banks, who scored at 4:41 of the third to give the Buckeyes a 34-19 lead.
On Michigan’s next possession, Jordan Fuller intercepted Michigan’s Shea Patterson and returned it to the Michigan 22.
Two plays later the Buckeyes scored on a 2-yard run by Mike Weber. The score increased Ohio State’s lead to 41-19 with 3:10 left in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Ohio State 62, Michigan 39
Michigan opened the fourth with a drive that ended on a 12 yard TD pass to Nico Collins, but Tuf Borland stopped Jonathon Cooper on the two-point conversion attempt, making it 41-25 Ohio State.
OSU responded with a 78-yard touchdown rush from Parris Campbell to make it 48-25, but a Ben Mason one-yard TD run cut the lead to 16, 48-32, with 9:35 left in the game.
From there the Buckeyes rattled off 14 unanswered points on touchdown passes to K.J. Hill and another TD to Campbell, making it 62-32 with 5:26 remaining. A Joe Milton TD cut it down to 62-39, but that’s as close as Michigan would get as the Buckeyes earned the 62-39 win.
With his two TD passes in the fourth, Haskins became the all-time Big Ten leader in touchdown passes for a single season, eclipsing Drew Brees’ record of 39. Haskins has 41 this season.
