Fischer’s Brace Leads Buckeyes to 2-1 Win at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Behind a pair of goals from Kayla Fischer, the Ohio State women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 win at Purdue Thursday night at Folk Field. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 8-5-3 on the year, 5-2-3 in Big Ten play, and clinch a spot in the Big Ten Tournament which starts next weekend at campus sites. The Boilermakers drop to 6-7-4 overall, 1-6-3 in conference play.

MATCH SUMMARY
– Ohio State wasted no time taking the lead as Fischer found the back of the net less than five minutes into the match. Marike Mousset played a cross from the right wing to the Buckeye freshman, who possessed inside the box and slotted a shot just inside the right post from 12 yards.

– The Buckeyes earned a couple chances late in the first half on long-distance shots by Blair Cowan but one sailed over the crossbar and another was saved by Purdue goalkeeper Katie Luce.
– Purdue then evened the score in the 50th minute. Teagan Jones played a cross from the right wing that trickled through the box where Sydney Duarte was able to finish from six yards to knot the score at 1-1.
– Ohio State regained the lead on another Fischer strike in the 66th minute. A Purdue clearance fell to the foot of Arden Holden, who slotted a pass to Fischer for the left-footed finish from 15 yards inside the right post.

– Fischer almost notched the hat trick in the 77th minute when she tracked down a long ball and tried to curl a shot from 15 yards on the right side of the box inside the left post, but it narrowly missed wide.
– Purdue earned a couple late corners and a couple half-chances saved by Kerr as the Buckeyes were able to hang on for the victory.
MATCH NOTES
– Kerr made six saves in the win.
– Fischer became the first Buckeye to score twice in a match since Eleanor Gabriel notched a brace in a 2-0 win at Illinois Sept. 20.
– With the two goals, Fischer now has four on the year to tie Izzy Rodriguez for the team lead.
– Mousset’s assist was her team-high third of the season.
– The Buckeyes improved to 3-0-0 on the year when Fischer scores.
– Ohio State improved to 8-0-0 on the year when scoring first and 33-1-1 when scoring the opening goal since the start of the 2016 season.
– The Buckeyes improved to 41-1-2 when scoring at least two goals in a match since the start of 2014. Ohio State is 4-0-0 in such contests this season.
