COLUMBUS, Ohio — For the second straight meet, the Ohio State Synchronized Swimming team didn’t let anything go to waste and performed a number of beautiful routines, this time at the Jessica Beck Memorial meet inside of McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday.
The Buckeyes dominated once again on the scoreboard, posting 93 points and besting Michigan (71) and Wright State (12).
After the Buckeyes’ 11 seniors were honored on their Senior Day prior to the meet, the trio of Emma Baranski, Morgan Boneberg and Elizabeth Davidson lit up the pool to a score of 82.2000. They were followed closely by the trio of Lorraine Hack, Alyssa Hoying and Monica Velazquez-Stiak who posted a score of 81.5667 to finish second. Wenjing Deng, Noelle St. John Stephanie Thielemann tallied a 73.2333 and the fourth Buckeye trio of Phoebe Coffin, Jasmine Pulido and Lizzie Walsh came in with a 73.2000.
In the duet, Baranski and Davidson notched a season-best score of 83.0667 to take first in the event followed by Hack and Hoying at 82.2667.
Swimming her elegant solo routine for the second straight competition, defending national champion Emma Baranski registered a score of 83.5000 to once again win the event.
The highlight of the day came at the end of the competition as the Buckeyes’ three teams — Scarlet, Gray and Buckeye — all showcased their routines for the first time in 2017. The Scarlet squad of Boneberg, Davidson, Deng, Hack, Hoying, St. John, Thielemann and Velazquez-Stiak won the event with a score of 83.1333. The Gray team, which consisted of Alexa Aton, Tori Baron, Coffin, Giannuzzi, Sarah House, Huibregtse, Pulido and Walsh, finished second at 81.9667. The Buckeye squad of Kaitlyn Carboun, Elizabeth Hernandez, Caroline Jimenez, Breanna Malone, Shea Ramsey, Starrett, Rachel Warren and Lizzie Welzien posted a 76.9667 in their first competitive swim together.
Ohio State completed its second Zero Waste event of the season on Saturday. The goal of the campus-wide initiative is to divert at least 90 percent of material from the landfill to either recycling or compost.
The Buckeyes will take their show on the road for the first time this season when it heads to Virginia next weekend for a pair of competitions. The first will be in Richmond on Sat. Feb. 11 and the second will be on Sunday, Feb. 12 at William & Mary.
