Columbus, Ohio— Two events, two NCAA A cuts, and two school records for Ohio State equaled a great start to the 2017 Big Ten Championships for the Buckeyes.
To kick off the competition Ohio State set a school record in the 200 medley relay. Matt McHugh, Jack Barone, Noah Lense, and Mossimo Chavez combined for a time of 1:24.15, well over two seconds faster than their seed time. Chavez, the Buckeyes’ fastest 50 freestyler this season (19.95), split 18.87 in the final leg of OSU’s third place relay finish.
Another program record fell in the second and final event, the 800 freestyle relay. Josh Fleagle, Brayden Seal, Ching Lim, and Andrew Appleby put together a time of 6:18.18 to take fourth place and earn an automatic spot at NCAA Championships. All four swimmers turned in season-best 200 freestyle times to combine for a record-setting 800 freestyle mark. Their time on Wednesday was almost 10 full seconds faster than their previous fastest.
Thursday will mark the first full day of swimming and diving at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Fans will be able to see the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, and 50 freestyle as well as the 400 medley relay and one-meter diving. Prelims will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET and finals at 6:30 p.m. ET.
