STANFORD, Calif. – The Ohio State University women’s golf team will be one of 24 schools competing for the 2016 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship (May 20-25) at the Eugene Country Club. Ohio State finished third in the 18-team NCAA Stanford Regional to book its fourth NCAA Championships appearances in the last six seasons.
The Buckeyes have now advanced to the NCAA’s final stage 20 times since 1983. Hall of Fame head coach Therese Hession has been at the helm for 15 trips to the national championship, including six Top-10 finishes.
Rio Watanabe was Ohio State’s top performer throughout the competition, maintaining a top-10 individual standing from start to finish in the 96-player field. She opened up at even par (71) on Thursday, followed with a 72 on Day Two before closing it out dipping two strokes under par at 69 in the final round. At the end of 54 holes, Watanabe wound up tied for sixth place in the 96-player field. The redshirt sophomore totaled 10 birdies in the event, ranked top-10 in the tournament.
Jessica Porvasnik joined Watanabe as a three-time contributor to the team tally. Porvasnik also matched Watanabe for the team’s low round, firing a 2-under 69 in the second. She surrounded the stellar effort with scores of 76 and 74 to finish T-18th overall at 6-over (76-69-74). The Hinckley, Ohio native’s 11 birdies were fifth-most among all players.
Fellow northeastern Ohioan, Niki Schroeder of Avon Lake, rebounded from a 78 on the first day to shoot 70-73 in the next two rounds. Her 8-over final ledger was good for a share of 27th place on the individual leaderboard.
Jaclyn Lee played a large role in the Buckeye advancement as well, chipping in two and half scores. She rattled off consistent tallies of 75-74-75 (+11) to tie for 42nd place. Katja Pogacar also donned the Scarlet & Gray out in California, recording rounds of 77-74-79 (+17).
Newly-minted volunteer assistant coach Jenny Gleason stepped up when needed. Officially added to the coaching staff earlier this week, Gleason filled in admirably for assistant coach Lisa Strom who was in Pennsylvania with her family due to the sudden passing of her father last Friday afternoon.
