EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 25 Ohio State University women’s golf team rolled out a 5-over 293 in the NCAA Championships First Round, good for a share of eighth place in the 24-team field. The Buckeyes are tied with No. 18 South Carolina and No. 15 Virginia entering round number two.
Ohio State is four shots clear of the Top-15 cutline (occurs after 54 holes) and nine back from the top (Oklahoma State; -4).
Redshirt sophomore Rio Watanabe led the Friday charge, shooting 2-under (70) on the strength of a bogey-free second half of the day. Following a bogey to fall back to 1-under on Hole #18 (Ohio State started the round on Hole #10), Watanabe rattled off eight consecutive pars before wrapping up the afternoon with a birdie on the final hole. She is slotted 11th out of 132 players on the individual leaderboard. Watanabe paced the Buckeyes in both birdies (4) and least bogies (2).
Katja Pogacar matched Watanabe at `the turn,’ also sitting minus-1. She added two bogies from there on to finish 1-over for the day, picking up a piece of 39th place.
Freshmen Jaclyn Lee and Niki Schroeder took similar journeys to identical scores of 75 (+3). Both shook off early jitters — three straight bogies to start for Schroeder and a pair for Lee — to battle back and contribute to the team sum. Schroeder’s string of bogies precluded an even par effort through the remaining 15 holes. Lee, meanwhile, ended her round just as she had started it — with subsequent bogies on the last two holes. She played the middle 14 holes at 1-under, however, to reach her final ledger of 75. Jessica Porvasnik reached the clubhouse 5-over (77) with a pair of birdies in her first four holes.
