No. 9 Ohio State Edged by Rutgers in Overtime – Ohio State Buckeyes

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — No. 9 Ohio State suffered a tough overtime loss, 13-12, Thursday evening to Rutgers at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway.
The back-and-forth slugfest featured six ties and four lead changes in the first 60 minutes until Rutgers’ Halley Barnes scored the game-winner 2:35 into the first overtime, dropping the Buckeyes to 11-3 and 2-2 in the conference.
Cian Dabrowski and Rainey Hodgson each scored four goals on the night for the Buckeyes with Hodgson also registering one assist. Molly Wood also netted a hat trick with three goals and an assist while Katie Frederick recorded 11 saves between the pipes, her third game this season with double-digit saves.
Rutgers (4-11, 1-3) jumped out to an early 4-1 lead with 9:18 left in the first half and led 5-2 at 4:09 after Barnes’ second goal of the game. The Buckeyes, however, ended the half strong with two huge goals in the final 2 minutes — one by Hodgson at 1:59 and the other by Dabrowski on a FP goal with 9 seconds left — sparking a 6-0 run that extended into the second half for an 8-5 lead at 23:53.
Then, with Ohio State leading 9-6 with less than 20 minutes to go, Rutgers scored four straight goals over the next 6+ minutes to take a 10-9 lead at 11:47. Dabrowski then put the team on her shoulders, scoring two straight goals at 11:02 and 9:58 to take the lead right back.
Then, with Ohio State leading by one with under 5 minutes to play, Dabrowski nearly put Ohio State up by 2 goals, but her laser shot was negated by the officials as they ruled the shot dangerous propelling. The call also drew a mandatory yellow card and helped Rutgers tie the game on a goal by Barnes at 2:57 on the man-up opportunity.
The Scarlet Knights then won the ensuing draw control, but the Buckeye defense held its ground, never letting its attack get a clean look to force overtime.
Ohio State’s Christine Easton led Ohio State with four draw controls and also netted a goal less than 30 seconds into the second half. Ohio State won the draw control battle, 14-13.
Ohio State will now have a quick turnaround as they host No. 10 Notre Dame at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
