Columbus, Ohio— Day three of the 2016 NCAA Championships is in the books and Ohio State has a couple new All-Americans.
Matt McHugh earned All-America status in both the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, while diver Stephen Romanik is an honorable mention All-American in the three-meter dive.
McHugh secured his All-American recognitions thanks to his prelim performances this morning. He came into the 100 fly with the second-fastest seed time in the field and bested that mark by a tenth of a second, posting a time of 45.35. A couple events later in the 100 back, the junior had a time of 45.77 in prelims which propelled him into the A finals. McHugh is the only swimmer thus far to swim in the championship heat of two separate events on the same day, excluding relays.
Looking at it historically, he is the first OSU swimmer since Reed Slevin in 1971 to be an All-American swimmer in two different strokes in the same season.
Romanik, who was the second-highest scorer at the NCAA Zone C Diving Meet a couple weeks ago, earned a spot in the B finals after posting a score of 384.25 in prelims. In the evening finals session, the sophomore had a mark of 387.60 on his way to his first career honorable mention All-America distinction.
Other Buckeye swimmers to compete today were Steffen Hillmer (1:36.60) and Brayden Seal (1:38.39), who both swam in the prelims of the 200 freestyle, as well as Dustin Tynes (53.16) and DJ MacDonald (53.41) who both swam in the 100 breaststroke.
Three other divers took to the boards in three-meter diving prelims but were unable to advance to the evening session. Colin Zeng (361.90), Aaron Daniels-Freeman (345.95), and Clay White (296.10) all represented the Scarlet & Gray today.
As a team, Ohio State still sits at 15th place with 66 points, third among Big Ten teams. On the docket for the final day of competition will be platform diving, 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and the 400 freestyle relay.
