GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Six members of the Ohio State Synchronized Swimming team advanced to the finals of the US Collegiate National Championships with solid performances in Thursday’s prelims.
Junior Emma Baranski started the day by placing first in the solo prelims with a score 83.4333. Freshman Wenjing Deng also swam an honorary solo routine on Thursday and her score of 74.9667 was good enough for fourth in the 21 competitor field.
In the duet, Baranski and Monica Velazquez-Stiak posted a score of 82.2000 and tied for first with the Stanford duo of Sandra Ortellado and Erica Slavin. The Buckeyes had two trios competing in the prelims on Thursday and both qualified for Saturday’s finals. Morgan Boneberg, Lorraine Hack and Alyssa Hoying qualified third with a score of 81.5000 and Baranksi, Velazquez-Stiak and Elizabeth Davidson were right behind them in fourth at 80.7000.
Friday’s portion of the competition will see the four technical competitions followed by the team prelims. Every Buckeye on the trip will compete in the morning technical competition and both the Scarlet and Gray squads will swim in the night cap. Finals of the solo, duet, trio and team competitions will take place on Saturday.
