No. 20 Buckeyes Fall at No. 14 Hofstra, 8-5 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 Ohio State suffered an 8-5 loss at No. 14 Hofstra Saturday in James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. The loss ends the Buckeyes’ three game winning streak, with the squad now 5-2 on the year. The Pride improves to 4-1.
Ohio State has a quick turnaround, hosting No. 6 Towson at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ohio Stadium, with BTN broadcasting the game. The Buckeyes are in a stretch of three games in eight games, with a game at No. 1 Denver Saturday. The matchup vs. the Pioneers will be televised by Fox College Sports.
The game was tied at 1 after the first quarter and Hofstra led 3-2 at halftime. The Pride scored the only goals of the third quarter for a 5-2 lead after 45 minutes. Ohio State drew within two (5-3 and 6-4) in the fourth quarter, but the Pride pulled away with two goals in a 1:01 span midway through the fourth.
“Hats off to Hofstra and their staff,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “Their goalie played great and they executed better than we did. Our men fought hard but did not make the plays needed to win. We are grateful for the incredible showing from the Buckeye faithful in the stands and ready to get home in search of win number six.”
Hofstra opened the scoring on a goal from Brian von Bargen at 12:51, but the Buckeyes answered just 51 seconds later, with freshman Jack Jasinski scoring off a pass from junior Austin Shanks, to tie the game at one. Shots were 8-4 in favor of Hofstra in the opening quarter.
The Pride scored two early goals in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead. Korey Hendrickson tallied at 13:14, followed by a score on a low shot from Josh Byrne at 11:51. The Buckeyes ended a scoreless streak of 24:36 when Jasinski passed across the crease to senior Ryan Hunter at the far post and he scored on a quick shot. Hofstra had 11 shots in the quarter, with Buckeye goalie Tom Carey making three saves, while Ohio State attempted six shots and the Pride goalie had four stops.
The only goals of the third quarter were scored by Hofstra, at 14:02 and 10:48, giving the pride a 5-2 lead through 45 minutes. The Buckeyes had 10 shots in the quarter, with Hofstra’s goalie making four stops, while the Pride took nine shots and Carey made three saves in the Buckeye cage.
Each team scored three times in the fourth quarter. Ohio State scored two of the first three goals in the period to draw within two. Just 54 seconds into the stanza junior Eric Fannell scored, assisted by junior JT Blubaugh. Less than a minute later (13:18) the Pride responded, but Hunter scored at 11:06 from just outside the crease, off a feed from Shanks, to make it a 6-4 game. Goals at 6:41 and 5:40 moved the Pride’s lead to four. Shanks tallied with 4:30 remaining to cut the advantage to three, but Ohio State could get no closer. Each team had eight shots in the fourth quarter, as Hofstra’s goalie made five stops and Carey had three saves.
The Buckeyes were outshot, 36-28, in the game. Carey played 58:28 and had 10 saves, allowing eight goals, for the Buckeyes. Freshman Willie Klan closed out the game, marking his first collegiate game action. Hofstra goalie Jack Concannon ended the game with 14 saves in all 60 minutes.
Jake Withers won 7-of-17 faceoffs on the day and led the Buckeyes with seven groundballs. Hofstra had the team edge in groundballs, 22-20.
Shanks led the Buckeyes with two assists and three points, his second straight three-point game and fifth multiple point game of the year. He leads Ohio State with eight assists and 16 points this season. Hunter had a season-high two goals and notched his third multiple point game. Jasinski had a goal and an assist for the second time in the last three games. Ohio State has held opponents to eight or less goals in six of seven games this season.
