COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 2-1, at No. 24 Wisconsin on a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon at McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis. With the loss, the Buckeyes finish the regular season with a 5-12-1 overall record and 3-4-1 mark in Big Ten play, while the Badgers improve to 10-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in conference action.
BADGERS STRIKES FIRST
Wisconsin, undefeated at home this season with an 8-0-1 mark, had a strong start in the opening 15 and found the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. After a shot was saved by Parker Siegfried, Elan Koenig scored his first goal of the season at 15:07 off the rebound. The Badgers held a 7-1 lead in shots and 3-0 lead in corners at the time of the opening goal.
WISCONSIN ADDS ANOTHER
The Badgers continued to dial in the pressure and found a second goal before halftime. Siegfried made a save from the far post on a shot by Christopher Mueller, but the ball played right to Isaac Schlenker, who buried in the rebound at 43:52. At half, shots were 15-3 in favor of the Badgers.
AMANKWA SCORES FIRST OF THE YEAR
Senior forward Yaw Amankwa gave the Buckeyes a late second-half goal for his first of the season. A native of Demascus, Md., Amankwa beat Schilling with a low strike from 30 yards out at 85:14 to cut the Wisconsin lead to 2-1. It was a positive result in a second half that saw Buckeyes outshot the Badgers, 12-4, while the OSU defense didn’t allow a goal in the final 45 minutes of play.
OTHER BUCKEYE CHANCES
- Ben Fitzpatrick had the first shot on target in the fourth minute, but was saved by goalkeeper Philipp Schilling.
- In the 27th minute, Niall Logue had a header saved off a Buckeye corner. Danny Jensen had the third shot on target in the opening half, but was also stopped by Schilling.
- The Buckeyes picked up the pace to start the second half. Hunter Robertson had a header go wide off a corner in the 51st minute. Jensen a dangerous chance two minutes later, but his strike was denied by Schilling.
- Following Amankwa’s goal, Ohio State pushed for a late equalizer. A shot by Jensen at 86:16 and a chance by Fitzpatrick at 88:24 were both blocked by the Badger defense.
MATCH NOTES
- Ohio State falls to 17-13-3 all-time vs. the Badgers.
- The Buckeyes conclude the regular season with a 5-12-1 overall record and 3-4-1 mark in Big Ten play.
- Yaw Amankwa scored his first goal of the season and third of his career. He now has 12 points in his OSU career in two seasons.
- Danny Jensen made his first appearance since Maryland (Oct. 7) after missing the last five matches due to injury. He had five shots in the match, including two on target.
