ROCHESTER, Mich. – The No. 13 Ohio State University women’s volleyball team moved its current winning streak to 10 consecutive matches after sweeping past a pair of opponents on Friday (Sept. 18) to open the Golden Grizzlies Invitational. Ohio State out-scored Eastern Illinois (25-13, 25-20, 25-16) and Western Michigan (25-11, 25-20, 25-21) by a combined 49 points in six winning sets (+8.2 points margin per set average).
Ohio State dominated from start to finish, trailing no later than 8-7 in any set. The Buckeyes found themselves behind on the scoreboard on just nine occasions all day. Both victories took only two hours and 23 minutes total to complete.
Elizabeth Campbell and Taylor Sandbothe each contributed over 20 points in the double triumph. Campbell accumulated 24 kills, two aces and a block assist while Sandbothe put away 16 kills, six blocks (2s, 4a) and an ace. Both Buckeyes attacked at a rate above .340. Valeria León maintained her ridiculous recent rate of digs production. The OSU libero racked up 38 digs in total, good for an average of 6.33 per set. Freshman setter Taylor Hughes did a little bit of everything, stuffing the stat sheet with 10 assists/set, 19 digs, seven kills, five blocks and a pair of aces.
It was an ‘all skate’ session against Eastern Illinois (5-6) as all 14 members of the OSU roster saw action. Ohio State attacked .295 as a team and limited the Panthers to a .117 clip. A sideout percentage of 72 percent for the Scarlet & Gray stymied EIU’s ability to make any kind of significant runs. León was a thorn in side for Eastern Illinois, thwarting the Panther attack with 22 digs.
Head coach Geoff Carlston notched his 11th coaching victory over Western Michigan (3-11), now owning an unblemished 11-0 mark versus the Broncos dating back to his tenure at the helm of the Ohio University Bobcat program. Three different Buckeyes registered double-digit digs. The list was highlighted by León’s 16 and closely followed by 11 digs from Hughes and 10 digs merging with Campbell’s 12 kills to create her fourth double-double this season and 11th as a Buckeye. Tyler Richardson shined as well, getting in on five of the team’s eight total stuffs.
The Buckeyes return to the hardwood Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon at 2 pm in search of their third straight tournament title. Host school, Oakland, stands in the way, however, looking to defend their home turf.
