INDIANPOLIS, Ind. – Ohio State tacked on two more strokes to its Big Ten Championship lead in the second round. The Buckeyes have built a five-stroke cushion over second-place Purdue with 18 holes to play on Sunday. Several Buckeyes are in the running for individual medalist honors as well, including 36-hole tournament leader Jan Chanpalangsri.
Ohio State, a 2014 co-conference champion, is 3-under overall while the Boilermakers are 2-over and 15th-ranked Northwestern is nipping at their heels with a 579 total (+3). Fellow defending co-champion Michigan State ranks fourth at 9-over.
The Buckeyes have excelled on all hole lengths, pacing the entire field on Par 3s, Par 4s and Par 5s. The squad’s 34 birdies are also a tournament best. Chanpalangsri and Katja Pogacar have each registered nine birdies to top the field.
Chanpalangsri is tied with Maryland’s Juliet Vongphoumy for the No. 1 slot. The Buckeye senior captain is 3-under overall and is in pursuit of Ohio State’s second straight Big Ten medalist honor. Pogacar might have something to say about that, however, back just a lone shot at 2-under and tied for third.
Jessica Porvasnik, the 2014 B1G medalist, could `go low’ on Day Three and potentially make a jump to the top. She has posted back-to-back even par 72s and is three back from the top (T-7th place) slot.
Rio Watanabe (+2) has made quite an impression in her first conference tournament, earning a share of 12th place thus far. Claudia Lim and Zoe-Beth Brake have represented the Scarlet & Gray as well. Lim is tied for 47th and Brake is slotted T-74th.
