COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University men’s golf program hosted a 14-team tournament on the Scarlet Course (par 71) this weekend and came out of the event with a third-place showing. Redshirt junior Grant Weaver was in contention for medalist honors until the very end before ultimately shaking out in fifth place individually.
Ohio State’s 278 team total in Round Two was the best of the entire event, even with tournament champion Georgia Tech’s identical 278 in the second round as well. The Buckeyes bookended their 4-under 278 with a 292 in the first and wrapping it up at 298 on Sunday. Ohio State has claimed top-5 status in 66 percent of its stroke play tournaments this season.
Weaver dug two shots under par on the Par 4s, one of just four players in the field to post red numbers. He racked up 11 birdies, tied for the third most of all players and tied with Sean Busch for the team lead. Weaver fired a second-round 67 to set up his fifth place finish at 1-under (72-67-73).
Tee-k Kelly, Clark Engle and Logan Jones all joined Weaver in the top-30 of the individual leaderboard. Kelly went 72-72-74 (+5) to sit 17th out of 75 total players. Engle came out hot with scores of 71-70 on Saturday before posting a 79 in the last round to tie for 20th place overall. Jones mimicked Weaver by going low in the second stanza. He slipped in a 2-under 69 between tallies of 77 and 76 to conclude the event at 9-over and earning a share of 29th place.
Busch, Wick and Coll each competed as individuals and slotted somewhere between 40th and 60th by tournament’s end. Busch logged rounds of 75-72-78 (+12) for T-41st while Wick (75-75-76) and Coll (74-76-79) tied for 46th and 58th, respectively.
Senior Boo Timko chipped in a 75 to the team tally on the final day. Overall, he was 19-over and tied for 67th place.
