COLUMBUS, Ohio– No. 19 Washington plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Ohio State on Saturday at the Husky Classic in Seattle. The Buckeyes finish the tournament 2-2 and are now 13-7 on the season.
The Buckeyes led 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, but relief pitcher Shelby Hursh gave up a lead-off double and walk to start the inning. A fielding error then allowed Washington to push across the tying run and a bases loaded walk gave the Huskies a 5-4 lead. A fly out to right field ended the inning, but Ohio State was unable to get a base runner in the seventh inning.
After Washington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off starter Olivia O’Reilly, Ohio State quickly responded with four runs in the top of the second, keyed by a three-run home from Caitlin Conrad, her fifth of the season. Conrad also has a team-high 24 RBI. Keelia Nester also pushed across the other run, connecting on a two-out RBI single.
From there, O’Reilly settled in, pitching three scoreless innings. Washington did have base runners in each of those innings and was finally able to make the Buckeyes pay in the fifth inning when Julia DePonte drew a bases loaded walk.
Ohio State managed five hits against Washington starter Casey Stangle, including a 2-for-3 day from Erika Leonard. O’Reilly and Hursh gave up just seven hits against a potent Huskies offense, but also walked 11 batters.
Over the four games this weekend in Seattle, Leonard hit .429 with three hits in seven at-bats and Conrad drove in a team-best five runs while hitting .375 with two runs scored, one home run and one double. Playing in her home state, senior Taylor Watkins hit .300 and collected her 200th career hit, a single in the eighth inning vs. Miami.
After playing its first 20 games on the road, Ohio State returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when it hosts Louisville at Buckeye Field for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 3 p.m. and admission is free.
