COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 15 Minnesota, 4-2, Friday to open a two-game Big Ten Conference series between the teams. Ohio State tied the game twice in the first period for a 2-2 game after 20 minutes, but the Gophers scored the only goals of the second period to take the lead for good.
The Buckeyes (11-18-2, 6-11-0-0 B1G) and Gophers (19-11-3, 10-4-3-0 B1G) will close the series at 6 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena and televised by ESPNews. The Buckeyes’ eight seniors will be recognized pregame as the Buckeyes close their home schedule for 2014-15.
The teams were tied at two after the first period, with the Buckeyes responding to a Gopher goal less than 30 seconds later twice. At 13:04 Justin Kloos opened the scoring for Minnesota. Just 12 seconds after that, senior Tanner Fritz fed junior defenseman Craig Dalrymple and his shot from the point went through for his first goal of the season. Fritz has a point in each of his last five games (4g, 5a, 9p) and leads Ohio State with 24 points this season. Dalrymple’s goal was his first since March 2, 2013 at Miami. Ohio State has at least one goal from a defenseman in each of its last three games.
At 17:04 of the first period Sam Warning put Minnesota ahead for the second time with a tally but the Buckeyes again answered quickly. Junior Anthony Greco found classmate Tyler Lundey in front of the net and he redirected the puck for his fifth goal of the year. Freshman Luke Stork had the second helper on the goal, which came at 17:23. Greco and Stork have a point in each of the last three games and Lundey has a point in three of his last four outings. Shots were 14-8 in favor of Minnesota in the first period.
Minnesota scored the only goals of the second period. Kyle Rau scored at 6:10 off a pass from Leon Bristedt after a faceoff deep in the Buckeye zone, putting Minnesota back in the lead, and at 15:36 Seth Ambroz tallied. Minnesota outshot Ohio State, 12-8, in the period.
The Buckeyes had 10 shots in the third period, and skated the final 3:31 with the extra attacker, but could get no closer. Minnesota put six shots on the Buckeye net in the period.
Ohio State was outshot by Minnesota, 32-26, in the game. Buckeye sophomore Christian Frey made 28 saves in 56:29 and Adam Wilcox had 24 stops in all 60 minutes.
The Buckeyes blocked 17 Minnesota shot attempts, led by freshman forward Matthew Weis with four and junior defenseman Sam Jardine with three.
Just three penalties were called in the game and neither team scored on the power play. Minnesota was 0-for-2 and Ohio State was 0-for-1. The Buckeyes have not allowed a power play goal in their last three games.
