COLUMBUS, Ohio – On Senior Night, the Ohio State men’s hockey team topped No. 15 Minnesota, 5-2, in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes scored the game’s final four goals, including three in the third period, for the win. Ten Buckeyes had at least a point in the victory, with five goal scorers. Senior captains Tanner Fritz and Matt Johnson each had a goal and an assist, with freshman Matthew Weis picking up two assists. Junior defenseman Craig Dalrymple scored the gamewinner in the third period vs. the Gophers (19-12-3, 10-5-3-0).
Ohio State (12-18-2, 7-11-0-0) closes the regular season with two games at Wisconsin next week. The teams will meet at 8 p.m. ET Friday and 7 p.m. ET Saturday in the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.
Prior to the game vs. the Gophers, the Buckeyes’ eight seniors – Darik Angeli, Clark Cristofoli, Justin DaSilva, Fritz, Johnson, Al McLean, Chad Niddery and Nick Oddo – were recognized.
Ohio State led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. Sophomore Nick Schilkey scored the only goal of the period, as he backhanded in the rebound of a Darik Angeli shot, with freshman Matthew Weis picking up the second assist on Schilkey’s ninth goal of the season. Ohio State put eight shots on net in the period, holding Minnesota to three. The Buckeyes were unable to score on two power play chances in the stanza.
The Gophers scored twice in the first 5:09 of the second period for a 2-1 lead. Taylor Cammarata tallied at 2:23 to tie the game and Vinni Lettieri put Minnesota ahead at 5:09. Johnson tied the score for the second time at 8:07, as he was able to score from just outside the crease with the Buckeyes skating 6-on-5 after a delayed penalty call on Minnesota. Weis and senior Clark Cristofoli had the assists on the goal, Johnson’s 13th of the season. The teams combined for 24 shots in the period, with Minnesota ahead, 13-11. Ohio State had the only full power play in the period, with the Gophers’ first chance of the night carrying into the third period.
Ohio State scored the only three goals of the third for the win. At 5:42 Dalrymple scored from the high slot off a pass from freshman Luke Stork. Defenseman Josh Healey had the second assist on the goal, Dalrymple’s second of the series. Minnesota pulled its goalie for the extra attacker and Ohio State was able to score twice into the empty net to secure the win. At 18:58 Greco scored, set up by Fritz, with Johnson picking up the second assist. Fritz then stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated in alone on the Gopher net, converting at 19:32. Ohio State had the advantage in shots, 13-8, in the period. Minnesota had the only power play in the stanza.
Ohio State outshot Minnesota, 32-24, in the game. Sophomore Christian Frey made 22 saves in 59:53 for the Buckeyes. Adam Wilcox made 27 saves in 58:50 in the Gopher net. Ohio State blocked 12 Gopher shots in the contest, led by Healey with four.
For the second night in a row, neither team was able to score on the power play. Ohio State was 0-for-3 and held Minnesota scoreless on two chances. The Buckeyes have not allowed a power play goal in their last four games.
