COLUMBUS, Ohio — D’Angelo Russell was selected to the United States Basketball Writers Association 2015 Freshman All-America Team Tuesday.
Ohio State’s rookie guard leads the Buckeyes in scoring (19.3 ppg.) and rebounding (5.6 rpg.). He is second is assists (168) and steals (53).
Russell, who has scored 10 or more points in 31-consecutive games, has scored 20 or more points 15 times this season and twice has reached the 30-point plateau.
Russell Selected to USBWA First Team
The United States Basketball Writers Association named Ohio State freshman guard D’Angelo Russell to its 2015 First Team All-America squad Monday. Russell leads Ohio State in scoring (638/19.3 ppg), rebounding (185/5.6 rpg.) and 3-pointers made (90). He is second in assists (168) and steals (53). He led the Big Ten in scoring during the league season (20.3 ppg.) and finished second in all games (19.3 ppg.). The Sporting News also selected Russell to its first team All-America squad last week.
Sporting News Names Russell 1st Team AA
D’Angelo Russell, Ohio State’s leading scorer and rebounder, was named to the Sporting News All-America First Team Monday. Russell averages 19.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He has handed out 168 assists, recorded 53 steals and owns the Ohio State freshman record for made 3s in a season (90). He became just the third freshman in Ohio State history to reach 600 points in his rookie campaign with 23 vs. Minnesota March 12 (638). He also was named to the NBCSports.com First Team All-America team and the Sports Illustrated First Team All-America squad last week.
Russell Among Rookie Leaders in OSU History
D’Angelo Russell has already put together one of the best freshman seasons in Ohio State history. He has the No. 2 scoring average among Ohio State freshmen all-time at 19.3 points per game. His 638 points rank No. 2, 218 field goals made rates No. 4 and the 90 made 3-pointers is an Ohio State rookie record. He currently ranks No. 4 in free throws made (112), No. 3 in assists (168) and No. 4 in steals (53). Classmate Jae’Sean Tate is No. 4 among Ohio State rookies in field goal percentage at .587 (118-201).
Russell Among Nation’s Best Freshmen
Among true freshmen nationally, Ohio State rookie D’Angelo Russell is the leading scorer in the country with an average of 19.2 points a game over his first 33 appearances in Columbus. Russell has been credited with 168 assists, the most among the Top 25 rookie offensive leaders nationally. He leads all rookies in combined points+assists+rebounds (PAR) with an average of 30.0. That total is fourth among Big Ten players over the last 10 years. Russell also has the only triple-double among freshmen nationally. He scored 23 points to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a 79-60 win at Rutgers Feb. 8.

- Ohio State freshman D’Angelo Russell was named one of five finalists March 8 for the Jerry West Award, honoring the best shooting guard in the country. The winner will be named April 10.
- Russell was named to the Wooden Award 15 finalists list March 7, he is one of three underclassmen remaining in contention for the honor, which recognizes the national player of the year. The winner will be named April 10.
- Russell was named (March 4) one of 10 semifinalists for the 2015 Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year, presented by AT&T. Four finalists will be named March 22 with the winner named April 5.
- Russell has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2015 Integris Wayman Tisdale Award, presented to the National Freshman Player of the Year, the USBWA announced March 1. The association will announce the winner of the award March 16.
- Russell also has been selected as a finalist by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association as one of 14 outstanding players for the 2015 Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually the nation’s top player.
