MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Ohio State men’s hockey lost to Minnesota, 4-2, in a Big Ten Conference game Friday in Mariucci Arena. The Gophers led 2-0 after the first period. The Buckeyes cut into the lead early in the second on a goal from junior Anthony Greco but Minnesota scored the final two goals of the period to lead 4-1 at the end of the stanza. Senior Nick Oddo drew Ohio State within two late in the third but the Buckeyes could get no closer. Ohio State sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 38 saves in the Buckeye net.
The Buckeyes (7-14-2, 2-7-0-0 B1G) and Gophers (13-9-3, 4-2-3-0 B1G) will close the series at 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET Saturday, with the game televised by FOX Sports North+ and picked up by SportsTime Ohio.
The Gophers had a 2-0 advantage after the opening period. Leon Bristedt put Minnesota on the board at 6:00, tallying from the faceoff circle on the first power play of the night. At 15:33 Justin Kloos got to a loose puck and scored for a 2-0 Minnesota advantage. Shots were 17-6 in favor of the Gophers in the stanza. Ohio State had one power play chance in the period.
Minnesota extended its lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes. The Buckeyes cut the Gopher lead to one (2-1) at 5:09 when Greco split the Minnesota defense to get to a pass from senior Tanner Fritz loose puck and scored on a quick shot. Junior Sam Jardine had the second assist on the goal, Greco’s team-best 13th of the season. Greco and Fritz lead the team with 15 points each this year. Travis Boyd put Minnesota back up by two with a power play goal at 8:19 and at 11:10, just after a Minnesota power play expired, Vinni Lettieri tallied to move the Gophers ahead 4-1. Shots were 20-10 in favor of Minnesota in the stanza. Minnesota was 1-for-3 with the man advantage, with Ohio State 0-for-1.
The only goal of the third period came at 18:10 when Oddo scored unassisted from the high slot, making it a 4-2 Gopher lead. The Buckeyes pulled Frey with 1:24 remaining, but could not draw closer. There were no penalties called in the period, and the Buckeyes outshot the Gophers, 7-5.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 42-23. Frey played 58:36 and had 38 saves for Ohio State. Minnesota’s Adam Wilcox made 21 stops in 59:55. The Buckeyes blocked 18 shots, led by sophomore Drew Brevig with five and junior Craig Dalrymple with four.
The Gophers were 2-for-4 on the power play in the game, with Ohio State scoreless on two chances.
