Ed Sabol, founder of NFL Films and a former Big Ten champion and All-American swimmer for the Buckeyes, passed away Monday at the age of 98.
Born in Atlantic City, N.J., Sabol was a noted swimmer in his youth, setting a world interscholastic record in the 100-yard freestyle in 1935. At Ohio State, he was a member of the Buckeyes’ National AAU champion and Big Ten champion 440-yard relay team in 1937.
Sabol founded NFL Films in 1964 after producing short, highlight-reel films of the 1962, 1963 and 1964 NFL Championships. During his tenure at NFL Films from 1964-1995, the organization won 52 Emmy Awards and played a large role in cultivating the popularity the league enjoys today. The company revolutionized sports film and television, introducing the use of reverse-angle replay; the addition of music to footage; and the use of a microphone on coaches, referees and players.
A veteran of World War II, Sabol was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He was married to his wife, Audrey, with a daughter, Blair; and son, Steve, one of his co-founders of NFL Films.
The Buckeye swimming family sends their consolences to the Sabol family.
