Matta Reaches Career, Ohio State History
Thad Matta has made a habit of achieving records and milestones over his coaching career, which spans 16 years. After a season at Butler, three at Xavier and the last 12 in Columbus, Matta coached his 500th career game as a head coach Dec. 13 vs. Morehead State. As an Ohio State head coach, the 13th in the history of the program, Matta set the all-time wins record, surpassing Fred Taylor’s 297 career victories over 18 seasons from 1959-1976, with a 79-73 win vs. Minnesota March 12, 2015 in Chicago. The Minnesota victory also gave him his 400th career win (403-128). Matta teams have never failed to win at least 20 games. His Ohio State teams have averaged 27.2 victories over his 11 full years in Columbus. He will be coaching in his 400th career game (301-98) at Ohio State when the Buckeyes take on VMI Saturday.

Last Time vs. Virginia Military Institute
Ohio State is 3-0 vs. VMI. All three games have come during the Thad Matta era and have been played in Columbus. Ohio State won the first meeting 107-69 Nov. 10, 2006. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 7 in that first meeting. Neither team was ranked in a 90-57 Ohio State win Nov. 25, 2007. The Buckeyes entered the most recent game as the No. 3 team nationally in a 107-74 win Nov. 23, 2011. The Buckeyes shot 68 percent from the field the last time out vs. the Keydets. William Buford (23), Jared Sullinger (17), Aaron Craft (13), Deshaun Thomas (11) and J.D. Weatherspoon (10) all reached double digit points for the Buckeyes. Sullinger added 12 rebounds.
Scouting Virginia Military Institute
Virginia Military Institute has started the season 3-3. VMI opened the season with a 62-50 loss at Penn State. The Keydets then downed Tusculum 88-76 at home. Virginia Tech defeated VMI 76-52 Nov. 21 in Blacksburg before the Keydets returned home to defeat Presbyterian College 76-61 Nov. 24. VMI then went on the road and fell 66-65 to Campbell before returning home to defeat Central Penn 107-72 last Wednesday. Junior guard QJ Peterson leads VMI with 20.2 points per game. Junior guard Julian Eleby contributes 16.3 ppg. Senior forward Phillip Anglade and junior forward Trey Chapman are the team’s top rebounders each with 6.3 boards a game.
Ohio State vs. The Southern Conference
Ohio State is 12-1 all-time vs. the current alignment of the Southern Conference. The Buckeyes have faced six of nine members at least once and have wins against all six. Chattanooga is the only league representative with a win vs. the Buckeyes. Ohio State has not met The Citadel, North Carolina Greensboro and Wofford. Ohio State’s Nov. 23, 2011 game vs. the VMI Keydets is the most recent meeting for Ohio State against a Southern Conference member. The Buckeyes will meet Mercer later this season (Dec. 22/9 p.m./ESPNU).
