Buckeyes Fall at No. 6 Omaha, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 6-ranked Omaha, 3-1, in the first game of a two-game nonconference series Friday in Baxter Arena in Omaha. After a scoreless first, the Mavericks (10-2-1) led 2-0 after the second period. Ohio State (3-8-0) cut the lead in half with 7:07 left in the third, but was unable to get the equalizer and Omaha sealed the win with an empty net goal. The teams will close the series at 8:07 p.m. Saturday.
There was no scoring in the first period. Ohio State put eight shots on net, with Omaha getting seven on the Buckeye goal. The Buckeyes had three power play chances in the period and Omaha was 0-for-1.
In the second, Omaha opened the scoring just 1:12 into the period on a tally from Luc Snuggerud and David Pope extended the lead to 2-0 at 6:43 with a tally. Shots were 16-13 in favor of the Buckeyes in the stanza. Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play in the period.
In the third, the Buckeyes made it a 2-1 game at 12:53. With Ohio State on the power play, Dalrymple was able to get to a loose puck with Buckeyes crashing the net and scored for the second game in a row. Senior Anthony Greco and freshman Dakota Joshua had the assists on the tally, Dalrymple’s second of the year. Greco is on a four-game point streak, with two goals, four assists and six points in the stretch. The Buckeyes, who outshot the Mavericks 13-11 in the period, pulled goalie Christian Frey for the extra attacker, but were unable to get the equalizer. The Buckeyes had the only two power play chances in the period, converting once.
For the game, the Buckeyes had 35 shots, with the Mavericks putting 33 on net. Frey played 58:14 and had 30 saves for the Buckeyes. Evan Weninger made 34 saves in all 60 minutes.
Ohio State was 1-for-7 on the power play in the game and is 4-for-13 (.308) in its last two games combined. The Buckeyes were 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and did not allow a power play goal for the fifth game in a row, stopping the last 16 chances against.
