Buckeyes Post 5-1 Win over Mercyhurst – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 5-1, Saturday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period before scoring three times in the second to break open the game. Each squad scored once in the third.
Junior forward Nick Schilkey led the Buckeyes (1-7) with three points, including his second two-goal game of the season, sophomores forwards Matthew Weis and Luke Stork each had a goal and an assist and senior forward Anthony Greco had two assists. Junior goalie Matt Tomkins made 27 saves, as Ohio State outshot the Lakers, 52-28.
Ohio State now has an open weekend before hosting Canisius Nov.13-14 in Value City Arena. The series marks the Buckeyes’ last home games until Jan. 15, 2016 vs. Michigan.
The only goal of the first period came at 17:33, when Ohio State converted on the power play. Schilkey picked up the goal, assisted by Weis and Greco, as it bounced in off a Laker defenseman. Ohio State carried play in the period and outshot Mercyhurst 17-4.
In the second, Stork took a long pass from junior Josh Healey and was able to convert a partial breakaway for his second goal of the year. At 5:08 freshman John Wiitala banked the puck in off the Laker goalie from the side of the net for his second goal of the year. Tomkins started the play up the ice, picking up his second career assist, and senior Tyler Lundey was able to get the puck to Wiitala for the assist. Schilkey added his second goal of the night at 12:39, assisted by Stork and freshman Mason Jobst. Ohio State had 20 shots in the period and Tomkins stopped all 11 Laker attempts on goal.
In the third, Weis completed a tic-tac-toe passing play with Greco and Schilkey, scoring on the short side from the faceoff circle at 4:44 with Ohio State on the power play. Philippe Drouin broke up the shutout at 8:39 when he was able to score from in front of the net. The teams combined for 28 shots in the period, with Ohio State holding the edge, 15-13.
For the game, Ohio State outshot Mercyhurst, 52-28, the first time the Buckeyes had more than 50 shots since Feb. 8, 2014 at Michigan State. Tomkins played all 60 minutes and made 27 saves. Adam Carlson had 47 stops for the Lakers in all 60 minutes. Ohio State blocked 10 shots, led by senior Craig Dalrymple with three. Mercyhurst blocked 20 of the Buckeyes’ shot attempts.
Ohio State was 2-for-6 on the power play and the penalty kill was 4-for-4, finishing the two-game series without allowing a power play goal in seven total chances against. The PK is now 28-for-33 (.848) on the year and has allowed a goal in just two of eight games this season.
Schilkey’s three-point night was the third of his career and first since Nov. 29, 2014 at Notre Dame. He leads the Buckeyes with five goals and eight points this season and has three goals, three assists and six points in his last three games combined. Stork, who had two goals and three assists for five points this season, had his second career two-point outing and the first since scoring twice at Penn State Jan. 9. Weis had his first multiple point game of the year and now has three goals and an assist for four points. Greco had his fifth two-assist night as a Buckeye and now has five points, with two goals and three assists, this season.
