Buckeyes Down Canisius 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind points from nine players, the Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 4-1 win over Canisius Friday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Luke Stork and 2-0 after the second with Matthew Weis scoring. Anthony Greco scored just 49 seconds into the third for a 3-0 Buckeye advantage. The Golden Griffins answered less than two minutes later but a Brendon Kearney goal at 14:37 helped the Buckeyes seal the win. Matt Tomkins had 29 saves in the victory, while junior David Gust had two assists, his second two assist game of the season.
The Buckeyes (2-7-0) and Golden Griffins (2-6-0) will close the series at 4 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. Script Ohio on Ice will be performed after the first intermission. Fans are invited to skate on the ice postgame; fans must bring their own skates.
Ohio State opened the scoring at 8:28 of the first period. Junior Nick Schilkey beat his defender and found sophomore Stork at the far side all alone and he was able to score his third goal of the year for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore blueliner Victor Bjorkung had the second assist on the tally. Schilkey leads Ohio State with nine points this season and is on a four-game point streak (3g, 4a, 7p). The Buckeyes outshot the Golden Griffins, 20-9, in the period, and each team was 0-for-1 on the power play.
The only goal of the second came from sophomore Matthew Weis at 5:38, who scored off a pass from Gust, with senior defenseman Craig Dalrymple starting the play up the ice. Weis’ goal was his fourth of the season and he has a point in four of the last five games. Ohio State outshot Canisius, 13-11, in the period. The teams again were 0-for-1 on the power play.
In the first minute of the third, Gust went on a breakaway. His shot was saved, but senior Anthony Greco was there for the rebound, tallying 49 seconds into the stanza. Canisius’ Ralph Cuddemi scored on the rush with the teams skating 4-on-4 at 2:38 to put the Golden Griffins on the board. The all freshman line of Kearney, Freddy Gerard and Dakota Joshua tallied the Buckeyes’ final goal at 14:37. Joshua got the puck to Gerard, who found Kearney in the slot and he scored into the top corner. The point was the first for all three Buckeyes in their Ohio State careers. Ohio State had 13 shots in the period, with Canisius putting 10 on net. Neither team had a power play chance.
Ohio State outshot Canisius, 46-30, in the game, its third game in a row with 40-plus shots. Tomkins had 29 saves, improving his save percentage to .919 and moving his goals-against average to 2.63. Canisius’ Simon Hofley had 42 saves in all 60 minutes.
Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play. The Buckeyes have not allowed a power play goal in seven of nine games this year.
