COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 2-1, Friday in Value City Arena. The teams will close the series at 4 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes (0-7), who outshot Mercyhurst (6-3) 40-16, had a penalty shot and a number of shot attempts that hit the post, led 1-0 after the first period. However, two Laker goals in the second period, including a shorthanded tally, held for the Mercyhurst win.
“You can’t win scoring one goal,” Steve Rohlik, Ohio State head coach, said. “I give them credit. They came in and did what they needed to do to win a hockey game. You have to get to the dirty areas. Certainly we had some great opportunities, but you have to finish. At the end of the day, the power play has to score a goal, and not give up a goal, and basically that was the game.”
Ohio State controlled play in the first period and led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. At 10:19 junior Nick Schilkey opened the scoring, taking a pass from classmate Drew Brevig, beating his defender and scoring with a shot into the far top corner for this third goal of the season. Ohio State outshot Mercyhurst, 12-4, in the period and each team was scoreless on one power play chance.
The Lakers tied the game at one 58 seconds into the second period. On a 3-on-2, Derek Barach took a pass from Taylor Best and scored with a shot under the crossbar. At 9:40 and with the Buckeyes on the power play, freshman Mason Jobst was tripped heading to the goal and awarded a penalty shot. He was unable to score on his attempt, the Buckeyes’ first since Nov. 15, 2014 vs. Bowling Green, leaving the teams tied at one.
Mercyhurst went ahead 2-1 at 15:14 of the second with a shorthanded goal, taking advantage of a turnover in the Laker zone and sending Kyle Cook into the Buckeye zone on a breakaway. He converted with a backhand, the first shorthanded goal allowed by the Buckeyes since Nov. 1, 2014 at Canisius. Shots were 14-5 in favor of the Buckeyes in the period and Ohio State was 0-for-2 on the power play, with Mercyhurst 0-for-1 and carrying a second chance into the third period.
Neither team was able to score in the third period. Ohio State held Mercyhurst scoreless on three total power play chances and the Buckeyes had one opportunity, putting five shots on net. The Buckeyes pulled goalie Christian Frey for the extra attacker with more than two minutes remaining and had chances, but were unable to tie the game. Ohio State had 14 shots in the period, holding Mercyhurst to seven.
For the game, Ohio State notched a season high 40 shots, holding Mercyhurst to an opponent season low 16. Frey made 14 saves in 57:34 between the pipes for the Buckeyes and the Lakers’ Brandon Wildung made 39 stops in all 60 minutes.
Each team was 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Ohio State has allowed a power play goal in just two of seven games this season.
