Buckeyes Suffer 6-4 Loss at No. 3 Providence – Ohio State Buckeyes

Oct. 24, 2015 PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 3-ranked and defending NCAA champion Providence, 6-4, Saturday in Schneider Arena. The Buckeyes scored twice in 31 seconds in the third to draw within two with just under eight minutes to go, but could get no closer.
Next up, the Buckeyes will host Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus.
The Friars (4-0-1) held a 3-0 lead after the first period. Brandon Tanev opened the scoring at 4:30 and Kevin Rooney scored on a delayed penalty at 13:18, while Ryan Tait had the third goal at 18:44. Providence outshot the Buckeyes in the period, 19-5, and Ohio State held the Friars scoreless on three power play chances, with a fourth carrying into the second period.
Providence led 4-2 after 40 minutes. The teams traded goals in 1:03 in the second period. At 9:55 Buckeye senior Tyler Lundey scored a shorthanded goal for his first tally of the year. Assists went to juniors Drew Brevig and Nick Schilkey, as Brevig started the play up the ice and Schilkey was able to put a first shot on goal, before Lundey was there to collect the puck and score with the goalie out of position. The Friars answered with a power play goal at 10:58 by John Gilmour. At 18:36 Buckeye sophomore Luke Stork tipped a shot by classmate Kevin Miller for his first tally of the year. Junior David Gust had the second assist on the power play goal. Ohio State put 18 shots on net in the period, while the Friars got seven shots through. Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play in the period, although unable to score on an extended 5-on-3. Providence was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
In the third, the Friars scored two power play goals in a 39 second span to extend the lead to 6-2, with Jake Walman tallying at 5:36 and Mark Jankowski scoring at 6:15. At 12:06, sophomore Matthew Weis converted on the power play, scoring from in close, with assists from Schilkey and Gust. The tally was Weis’ second of the weekend. At 12:37 freshman John Wiitala netted his first career goal, scoring off an assist from sophomore Christian Lampasso. Senior defenseman Craig Dalrymple had the second assist on the goal. The Buckeyes pulled their goalie for the extra attacker with more than four minutes remaining, and were able to block a number of Friar attempts at the empty net, but could not draw closer. Ohio State had 11 shots in the period, with Providence putting six on net. Ohio State was 1-for-2 on the power play, with Providence 2-for-3.
For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Friars, 34-32. Buckeye junior goalie Matt Tomkins had 26 saves in 56:45, while Nick Ellis made 30 stops in 59:23 for Providence.
For the second night in a row, Ohio State blocked 21 shots. Junior Drew Brevig led the team with four, with freshman Sasha Lacrocque blocking three.
The Buckeyes converted 2-of-6 power play chances and were 3-for-10 on the weekend. Providence was 3-for-10 in the game.
Gust now leads the Buckeyes with five assists and six points this season. It was his first career two-assist game and his fourth multiple-point outing. Schilkey, who has two goals and two assists for four points, now has 14 multiple point outings as a Buckeye, including 12 two-point nights.
