Buckeyes Fall to No. 3 Friars, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell in game one of a two-game series at No. 3-ranked and defending NCAA champion Providence, 2-1, Friday in Schneider Arena. The Buckeyes (0-5) and Friars (3-0-1) will close the series at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Friars led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 at 6:22 of the second period. Buckeye sophomore Matthew Weis cut the lead in half at 11:03 of the middle stanza with a 5-on-3 power play goal, but the Buckeyes could get no closer. Buckeye junior goalie Matt Tomkins made 28 saves in the game and the Ohio State penalty kill was 4-for-4.
Providence opened the scoring at 15:24 of the first period when Tom Parisi scored from the high slot. The Friars outshot the Buckeyes, 13-9, in the period and Ohio State held Providence scoreless on the only power play chance.
In the second, the Friars’ Anthony Fiorentino blasted a shot from inside the blue line for a 2-0 lead at 6:22. Ohio State had a 5-on-3 for nearly two minutes and was able to convert, as Weis scored from the faceoff circle, assisted by junior David Gust. Weis’ goal was his first of the season, while Gust has a team-best three assists and four points on the year. The Buckeyes’ had four power play chances in the period and stopped the Friars on two opportunities.
Neither team was able to score in the third period, as each squad put five shots on net. Ohio State held the Friars scoreless on a late power play chance on the only penalty of the stanza. The Buckeyes pulled Tomkins for the extra skater in the final minute but could not take advantage.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 30-27. Tomkins made 28 saves in 59:01 and Providence’s Nick Ellis had 26 saves in 59:36.
The Buckeyes blocked 21 Friar shot attempts, led by freshman defenseman Sasha Larocque with five and juniors Nick Schilkey and Drew Brevig with three each.
Ohio State had the edge in special teams, converting 1-of-4 chances and holding Providence scoreless on four attempts.
