Flower Advances in Qualifying at ITA Midwest Regional, Doubles Draws Announced – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nicole Flower, a redshirt senior on the Ohio State women’s tennis team, won two matches in qualifying Thursday at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. Flower will compete Friday morning for one of eight spots in the main draw.
In the first round of qualifying, Flower posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grace Tapak of Illinois. In the second round, Flower defeated Jackie Altansarnai of Illinois Chicago in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. She will face Western Michigan’s Melina Lyubimirova in the third round.
Two rounds of doubles play are also scheduled for Friday. In the 48-team doubles draw, the tandems of junior Miho Kowase and sophomore Anna Sanford and juniors Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehuas both received 5-8 seeds and a bye into the second round. Kowase and Sanford will play not before 4 p.m. Friday, with Paz and Niehaus set to take the court no earlier than 4:45 p.m. The duo of senior Grainne O’Neill and freshman Andrea Ballinger will face a team from Western Michigan in the first round at 2 p.m.
Winners of both the singles and doubles draws earn a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships. The doubles championship is slated to be played Monday, with the singles championship set for Tuesday. All qualifying and main draw matches in the tournament, which runs through Tuesday, will be played indoors.
