Ohio State Prevails in OT at Penn State, 5-4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Anthony Greco’s goal in overtime lifted the Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 5-4 victory at Penn State in a Big Ten Conference game Friday in Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. The line of freshmen Luke Stork and Christian Lampasso and senior Nick Oddo led the Buckeyes in the win, coming for three goals and seven points. Stork scored twice, Lampasso had three points on a goal and two assists and Oddo had two helpers. Goalie Christian Frey made 53 saves in the game.
After a scoreless first period, Ohio State scored twice in the last four minutes of the second period for a 2-0 advantage. The Buckeyes extended the lead to 4-0 early in the third period before Penn State scored four goals in a row to deadlock the score. PSU tallied at 6:57, 8:06 and 14:07 of the third before tying the game with 22 seconds left while skating with the net empty. Frey stopped six shots in overtime before Greco’s OT winner with 46 seconds remaining.
The Buckeyes (7-9-2, 2-2-0-0 B1G) and Nittany Lions (9-7-2, 3-2-0-0 B1G) will close the weekend series at 3 p.m. Saturday in University Park. Neither team was able to score in the first period. Frey stopped all 18 shots he faced, with the Buckeyes putting eight on net.
The game remained scoreless until Stork put in the rebound of his own shot at 16:03 of the second, assisted by Oddo and Lampasso. With 38 seconds left in the stanza, Lampasso took a stretch pass from junior defenseman Sam Jardine and scored on the fly, putting the Buckeyes up 2-0. Oddo had the second helper on the goal. The teams combined for 29 shots in the period, with Ohio State ahead, 16-13.
The teams combined for six goals in the third period. Stork scored five-hole from a sharp angle 59 seconds into the stanza, assisted by Lampasso and freshman defenseman Janik Moser. At 2:45, sophomore Nick Schilkey scored on a wraparound, with assists from linemates Matt Johnson and Matthew Weis. The Nittany Lions then scored four consecutive goals to deadlock the score. Casey Bailey scored at 6:57 and 8:06 to cut the Buckeye lead in half. At 14:07 David Goodwin made it a one-goal game with a shot that deflected and fluttered in. With the extra attacker on the ice and the net empty, Bailey completed his hat trick with 22 seconds left in regulation. Penn State put 20 shots on net in the period and Ohio State had nine on goal.
In the last minute of overtime, Greco got to the puck in the neutral zone and scored far side. Frey made six saves in overtime, as Penn State outshot the Buckeyes, 6-2.
Penn State outshot the Buckeyes, 57-35, in the game. Frey played 64:14 for Ohio State and made 53 saves, his second game with 50 or more saves this season. For Penn State, Matthew Skoff started and played the first 40:59, allowing three goals and making 22 saves. PJ Musico took the loss, giving up two goals in 22:19.
The Buckeyes blocked 29 Penn State shot attempts, led by junior defenseman Blake Doerring with eight and senior forward Tanner Fritz with five.
Each team had just one power play chance in the game.
Postgame Notes
• Stork had the first multiple point game of his career and now has a 4-2-6 line on the year.
• Lampasso had a career-high three points in the win, notching his second multiple-point game and recording his first collegiate goal. He is on a five-game point streak (1g, 7a, 8p). He is tied for the team lead with nine assists.
• Johnson extended his point streak to six games (6g, 2a, 8p) and is tied for third on the team with 11 points.
• Greco leads the Buckeyes with nine goals this season and has three gamewinners. He also scored the OT winner in the Buckeyes’ victory over Providence in the season opener Oct. 10. He has a goal in three of the last four games. He has 11 points this season, tying for third on the squad.
• Oddo had his first multiple-assist game of the season and ninth career two-point night.
• The Buckeyes have five or more goals in three of the last five games.
• Ohio State’s one penalty was a season low.
• Frey had his second game with 50 or more saves, following his 60-save performance at Miami Oct. 18.
• Schilkey is now second on the team with 12 points, with five goals and seven assists.
• Weis has a team-high tying nine assists on the year. He is tied for third on the team in points with 11.
• The Buckeyes are 5-2-2 on the road this season and have a 2-1-2 ledger in overtime games on the year.
