Ohio State Falls at Penn State, 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – In game two of a Big Ten Conference series, the Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Penn State, 4-1, Saturday in Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. The Buckeyes (7-10-2, 2-3-0-0 B1G) and Nittany Lions (10-7-2, 4-2-0-0 B1G) split the weekend series, with Ohio State winning game one in overtime, 5-4.
Up next, Ohio State will return home to host Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena. It is the Buckeyes’ lone home game in January.
The teams were scoreless in the first period until the final minute, when Penn State’s Curtis Loik scored on the power play at 19:18. Ohio State was unable to convert one power play chance. The Nittany Lions had 14 shots on goal, with the Buckeyes getting eight through.
In the second period, Ohio State tied the game at 4:45, converting a short 5-on-3 power play. Freshman Christian Lampasso found classmate Matthew Weis at the far post and he was able to score with the goalie out of position. Rookie defenseman Janik Moser had the first assist on the goal, Ohio State’s first 5-on-3 score of the year. The Buckeyes outshot Penn State 13-0 through the first 10:17 but after that point, the Nittany Lions had the edge in shots, 13-3, through the rest of the stanza. The Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead at 12:09 when David Goodwin scored and 50 seconds later Eric Scheid converted a 2-on-0 breakaway off a pass from Scott Conway with the teams skating 4-on-4 to give PSU a two-goal lead. For the period, Ohio State led in shots, 16-13. Ohio State had the only two power plays of the stanza, going 1-for-2.
The Buckeyes put 12 shots on goal in the third period, and had one power play chance, but were unable to cut in to the Nittany Lion lead. Scheid sealed the win for Penn State with an empty net goal at 18:17. Penn State was 0-for-2 on the power play and put eight shots on the Buckeye net in the period.
Ohio State outshot Penn State, 36-35, in the game. Buckeye sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 31 saves, allowing three goals, in 59:39. Penn State’s Eamon McAdam had 35 saves in all 60 minutes.
Each team scored once on the power play. Ohio State was 1-for-4 and Penn State was 1-for-3.
Weis is tied for second on the team with 12 points and has a point in four of his last five games. He now has three goals and nine assists this season. Lampasso, who had a team-high four points in the series, extended his point streak to seven games (1g, 8a, 9p) with a helper. He is first on the team with 10 assists this year. Moser has an assist in each of his last three games.
