Russell Sweeps B1G Weekly Honors
D’Angelo Russell averaged 27.5 points after a career high 33 points at Northwestern and a follow-up effort of 22 points and a career-best 10 assists vs. Indiana last week. Those numbers led to him being named both the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week (1/26/15). Russell’s effort also earned him the NCAA.com, CBSSports.com, Naismith Trophy and Oscar Robertson player of the week accolades.
Wayman Tisdale Watch List Includes Russell
The 2015 Integris Wayman Tisdale Award Midseason Watch List includes 14 players under consideration for the national freshman of the year award. Ohio State’s D’Angelo Russell is among the contenders. Russell is the leading freshman scorer in the country at 19.4 ppg. He also is among the leaders in several other categories. He has earned one Big Ten player of the week ward and four league freshman of the week accolades. Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger earned the 2011 Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award following his rookie campaign.
Matta Climbing All-Time Big Ten Wins Chart
Thad Matta has 126 career regular-season wins in Big Ten Conference play to rank No. 15 all-time in Big Ten history. Matta passed Dr. Tom Davis of Iowa (125 wins from 1986-99) with an 82-70 win in Columbus vs. Indiana Jan. 26.
Scouting the Maryland Terrapins
Maryland travels to Columbus with an overall record of 18-3 and a 6-2 Big Ten slate. In its first year in the Big Ten, the Terrapins own a pair of wins vs. Michigan State along with victories over Minnesota, Purdue, Rutgers and most recently at home over Northwestern. League losses have come against Illinois and Indiana, both on the road. Freshman guard Melo Trimble is the team’s leading scorer at 16.3 points per game. Two others, junior forward Jake Layman (14.3 ppg.) and senior guard Dez Wells (13.6 ppg.) contribute in double figures offensively for the Terrapins. Layman is the team’s leading rebounder with 6.9 rpg.
The Ohio State vs. Maryland Series
Ohio State is facing Maryland for the first time as fellow Big Ten Conference members. Prior to this year, the Buckeyes and Terrapins met six times with Ohio State claiming victory in four of those games.
