Russell Among Wooden Midseason Top 25
The Los Angeles Athletic Club named Ohio State rookie D’Angelo Russell to the 2015 Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Jan. 14. Russell is one of five freshmen nationally to make the list. In 18 games, Russell leads the Buckeyes with 18.1 points per game. That scoring average rates No. 2 in the country among freshmen. He has twice been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week and is one of only three players in the country to average more than 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Matta Climbing All-Time Big Ten Wins Chart
Thad Matta has 124 career regular-season wins in Big Ten Conference play to rank No. 16 all-time in Big Ten history. Dr. Tom Davis of Iowa is currently in the No. 15 spot with 125 wins from 1986-99.
Scouting the Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa enters the game vs. the Buckeyes at 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes’ most recently defeated Minnesota on the road 77-75 Tuesday after a home loss to Michigan State Jan. 8. Senior Aaron White, a native of Strongsville, Ohio, leads the Hawkeyes with 15.8 points per game and a team leading 7.1 rebounds per contest. Jarrod Uthoff, a Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native who began his career at Wisconsin but then transferred to Iowa after his redshirt freshman year, is now a junior with the Hawkeyes. He is the No. 2 scorer and rebounder for Iowa with 12.1 points and 6.8 boards per game.
The Ohio State vs. Iowa Series
Iowa leads the overall series with the Buckeyes 75-72 with Ohio State leading 46-27 in Columbus. The Hawkeyes are 47-24 in Iowa City and, in three neutral site meetings, Ohio State leads 2-1. Thad Matta’s Buckeyes are 12-6 vs. the Hawkeyes since the 2004-05 season. In the Matta era, Ohio State is 7-2 in games played at Value City Arena, 5-3 at Iowa and 0-1 in neutral site games. Sam Thompson, Shannon Scott and Amir Williams each have faced Iowa five times in their careers. Thompson averages a team-high 9.4 points per game vs. the Hawkeyes with Williams chipping in 6.8 ppg and Scott 5.6 ppg. Ohio State has won nine of the last 11 games and the last five in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes won in Columbus Dec. 30 in the Big Ten opener for both schools this year. The Buckeyes have been unranked in the series six times over the last 11 years and have a record of 2-4 in those games. The last time both teams were unranked was March 3, 2009, a 60-58 win for the Buckeyes in Iowa City. Ohio State, the No. 4 team nationally in field goal shooting percentage, has connected on better than 50 percent of its shots vs. the Hawkeyes nine times in the Matta era and in three of the last five meetings. Matta teams are 8-1 vs. Iowa when shooting 50 percent or better. Iowa has made half its shots once in the last 11 years, a 68-65 Ohio State win Dec. 31, 2008 in Columbus.

Ohio State is in its 103rd season as a member of the Big Ten Conference in 2014-15. The Buckeyes own an overall record of 774-687 against current league members. Thad Matta, in 15 seasons as a head coach, owns an overall record of 149-64 vs. league members, including a mark of 145-61 while coaching the Buckeyes.
Noting the Michigan Game
• Ohio State leads the overall series with the Wolverines 94-75 with the Buckeyes leading 54-27 in Columbus.
• Ohio State has won nine of the last 13 games and 10 of the last 11 in Columbus. Michigan won both meetings a year ago.
• The game was the first since Jan. 28, 2009, when both teams were unranked (AP). OSU won that game 72-54 in Columbus. Since 2005, both teams have been unranked in just five of 24 meetings. Ohio State is 4-1 in those five games, all four wins were in Columbus.
• Before today, both teams were ranked in seven consecutive meetings. Ohio State was ranked in the last 13 games vs. Michigan. UM was ranked in 9 of last 23 games vs. Ohio State.
• Three players scored in double figures for the Buckeyes: D’Angelo Russell (21), Sam Thompson (12) and Amir Williams (10).
• The Buckeyes own an overall record of 774-687 against current members of the Big Ten Conference.
• Ohio State has scored 70 or more points in all 14 wins this season, holding an overall record of 14-1 when reaching the mark.
• The Buckeyes committed nine turnovers vs. the Wolverines. The Buckeyes have recorded fewer than 10 turnovers eight times this season.

• Scott recorded one steal vs. Michigan. He ranks No. 3 all-time on Ohio State’s all-time steals list with 194 thefts. Scott needs six more steals this season to become the third Buckeye all-time to reach 200 steals in a career and 11 more to pass Jay Burson for No. 2 in program history (204).
• Sam Thompson scored 12 points vs. the Wolverines. He has scored in double figures four of the last five games.
• Thompson played in his 129th game, tying Brian Brown (1992-02) for No. 10 in most games played.
• Thompson recorded a career-high 5 steals. He bested his former career-high (3) in the first half with 4 steals.
• Amir Williams recorded three blocks vs. the Wolverines. With 172 blocks for his career, he ranks fifth on Ohio State’s all-time list for blocked shots acquired in a career. He needs 16 more to surpass Brad Sellers for the No. 4 spot.
