No. 10 Ohio State Dominates SCSU, 4-0, For a Series Sweep – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 10th-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team earned its seventh shutout of the season in a 4-0 blanking of St. Cloud State Saturday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. With the victory, the Buckeyes (14-8-2, 9-7-2-1 WCHA) completed a series sweep of the Huskies (6-16-1, 3-12-1-1 WCHA), which extended their school-record road win streak to six games.
Similar to game one of the series, senior defenseman Kari Schmitt and junior forward Julia McKinnon notched Ohio State’s opening goals of the contest. Schmitt scored her first of the game during a power play in the first period at 16:36. Providing the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead, the play was assisted by seniors Danielle Gagne and Taylor Kuehl. For the period, OSU held a 5-4 advantage in shots, while freshman goalie Kassidy Sauve registered four saves.
McKinnon found the back of the net at 15:54 in the second, putting the Buckeyes up 2-0. The goal marked her ninth of the season. Sophomore standout Claudia Kepler contributed the lone assist on the scoring effort. Sauve continued to be a force for the Scarlet and Gray throughout the stanza, adding five more saves. Ohio State again outshot the Huskies, 10-5.
Moving onto the third period, Schmitt posted her second goal of the game, and third of the series, at 2:09. Once again in a man-advantage situation, Gagne and Kayla Sullivan added helpers for the score. The Buckeyes continued to flourish offensively, extending the lead to 4-0 at 11:04 with a goal from junior forward Kendall Curtis. Junior forward Melani Moylan and redshirt senior defenseman Kara Gust assisted Curtis on her fourth goal of the season.
Sauve picked up the fifth shutout of her rookie campaign, earning 17 saves in 59:57. The win moves Sauve to 8-7-0 on the season. St. Cloud State’s goalie, Katie Fitzgerald, was credited with 20 saves in 60 minutes.
For the game, Ohio State held a 24-17 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes scored on two of eight power play chances, while dominating on the penalty kill with a 5-for-5 outcome.
The Scarlet and Gray return home after a six-game road swing to face-off against North Dakota, Jan. 16-17.
