ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Despite individual wins from Katja Pogacar and Rio Watanabe, the Ohio State women’s golf team fell, 3-2, to Southern Methodist University in the semifinals of the inaugural East & West Match Play Challenge. Ohio State’s three losses came by a total of four holes, dropping a pair of 1 UP matches and another 2 UP.
Pogacar put forth a dominating performance, defeating Jenny Haglund 6 & 5. The sophomore Buckeye ignited for a hot streak starting on Hole 8, taking five of the next six holes to close the door on Haglund.
Watanabe got out to a quick start, grabbing the first two holes over Lindsey McCurdy. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Week never trailed in the match en route to a 3 & 2 victory.
Jan Chanpalangsri was all-square with Alexandra Rossi through 16 holes before a birdie from Ross on the 17th proved to be the difference in the 1 UP match. Claudia Lim suffered the same fate as SMU’s Katie Page topped her by a lone hole.
Competing in the individual match play bracket, Lina Aguillon dug herself a four-hole deficit before storming back to arise victorious in thrilling fashion. Aguillon seized the 15th, 16th and 18th holes to force a playoff where she completed the comeback and advanced to the title match. Aguillon will face Michigan’s Megan Kim in the finals.
The third-place match in the team bracket pits Ohio State versus Wisconsin. Tee times for that Big Ten showdown start at 9:48 a.m. ET.
