B1G Selects Russell League Frosh of the Week
Ohio State rookie D’Angelo Russell was named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week Monday after averaging 18.0 points over two games at Louisville (17 pts.) and Colgate (19 pts.) last week. Russell led Ohio State’s second half comeback effort at Louisville, drawing the Buckeyes to within three points after Ohio State trailed by 17 at the half. Russell’s 19 points vs. Colgate helped the Buckeyes secure the 2014 Buckeye Classic Championship with their fourth victory in the event. Nationally, Russell is No. 2 among freshman scorers with 18.0 ppg, rates No. 1 in PAR (pts.+asts.+rebs) at 27.6 per game and leads the Top 25 freshman scorers nationally with 37 assists.
Buckeyes in the B1G
Shannon Scott is leading the Big Ten Conference in assists with a total of 57 and an average of 8.1 apg. No other league player has reached 50 total or averages more than 5.8 a game so far this season. Amir Williams leads the league in field goal percentage, making 75 percent of his shots so far (18-24). Marc Loving is sixth in FG pct (27-46/.587) and is the league’s top shooter from 3-point range (14-25/.560). As a team, Ohio State leads in scoring margin (+23.0) and is No. 2 in both field goal percentage (.517) and field goal percentage defense (.365).
Buckeyes Win Buckeye Challenge
Ohio State went 4-0 in the 2014 Buckeye Challenge with wins vs. Sacred Heart, Campbell, James Madison and Colgate. Freshman D’Angelo Russell averaged a team-high 21.8 points with sophomore Marc Loving adding 13.3 ppg. over the four games. Russell connected on 33 of 65 field goals (.508) while making 13 of 25 from 3-point range (.520). He also handed out 21 assists and recorded seven steals. Senior Shannon Scott dished out 31 helpers to go with 11 thefts. As a team, the Buckeyes enjoyed an average margin of victory of 30.5 ppg. and shot 51 percent from the field (128-249).
Russell, Scott Earn Nominations
Freshman D’Angelo Russell is one of 50 Division I men’s basketball players to earn a spot on the 2015 Top 50 Watch List for the annual Naismith Trophy. The Award is presented by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Shannon Scott also earned a nomination for the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2015 Allstate Good Works Team. This community service award recognizes student-athletes wo enrich the lives of others and contribute to the greater good of their communities.
Russell Among Nation’s Best Freshmen
Among true freshmen nationally, Ohio State rookie D’Angelo Russell is the second-leading scorer in the country with an average of 18.0 points a game over his first seven appearances in Columbus. Russell has been credited with 37 assists, the most among the Top 25 rookie offensive leaders nationally. He leads all rookies in combined points+assists+rebounds (PAR) with an average of 27.6.
Buckeyes In Top 20 nationally in Field Goal Percentage, Scott 2nd in assists per game
Senior Shannon Scott is second in the nation in assists per game with 8.1 a contest and the Buckeyes are No. 12 nationally in field goal shooting percentage at nearly 52 percent scoring accuracy. Ohio State has made 214-of-414 field goal attempts (.517).
B1G Recognizes Scott With Co-POW Award
After setting the Ohio State single-game record for assists and averaging 15 helpers over two games, the Big Ten named Shannon Scott Co-Player of the Week Nov. 24. It’s the first POW honor in his career. The 30 assists led to 71 points (19 2-pt baskets and 11 3s) scored by teammates. Scott also scored 19 points to account for 90 of 180 points scored by the Buckeyes in wins vs. Marquette and Sacred Heart.
Scott Setting Assist Records
In the opening three games of the 2014-15 season, Ohio State senior Shannon Scott handed out 10 or more assists in three-consecutive games. He set career highs in helpers each time out the first three games of the season with 11 assists in the season opener vs. UMass-Lowell, 14 vs. Marquette and an Ohio State-record 16 assists vs. Sacred Heart Sunday. His 57 assists rate No. 9(t) in the country in total assists. Scott is third nationally in assists per game with 8.1. Scott also has set Ohio State records for consecutive games with 10 or more assists (3) and the highest assist total over three consecutive games (41) and in back to back games (30). In his career, Scott has 378 assists. He is in the No. 10 spot all-time at Ohio State. In Big Ten history, Scott’s 16 assists vs. Sacred Heart is tied for the No. 4 spot all-time with four others, most recently by Demetri McCamey of Illinois vs. Purdue (1/12/94).
It’s Give and Take for Shannon Scott
Not only is Shannon Scott rewriting the single game records in assists at Ohio State, he continues to move up the charts in career steals as well. With 170 thefts for this career, Scott is No. 4 spot all-time. David Lighty holds down the No. 3 position with 191 steals from 2007-11.
Scouting the High Point Panthers
High Point travels to Columbus with a 6-2 record and wins in three of the last four games. The Panthers opened the 2014-15 campaign with three-consecutive wins, the first a four-overtime win over Cal State-Bakersfield, 100-99, followed by victories over Arkansas-Pine Bluff and then at Hawaii. The Panthers then lost two of the next three before wins the last two times out vs. North Carolina-Greensboro and William and Mary. The Panthers are led by junior forward John Brown with 19.6 points per game. The Jacksonville, Florida, native has scored 1,200 career points for High Point and has a career scoring average of 18.2 ppg. Two others, graduate student Brian Richardson (11.1 ppg.) and senior Devante Wallace (10.9 ppg.) also contribute double figures offensively. Brown is the team’s leading rebounder with an average of 5.6 boards a game.
The Ohio State vs. High Point Series
Ohio State and High Point are facing one another for the first time in history. The Buckeyes have a 12-0 record vs. teams representing the Big South Conference. Ohio State last played a member of the Big South Conference Dec. 18, 2012 when Winthrop traveled to Columbus and fell to the No. 7 Buckeyes, 65-55.
