COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 19 Omaha, 4-1, Friday in Value City Arena in the opening game of a non-conference series. The Buckeyes (2-4-1, 0-0-0 B1G) and Mavericks (5-2-1, 2-0-0 NCHC) will close the series at 7 p.m. Saturday in VCA.
Friday was Military Appreciation Day for Ohio State. Master Sergeant James Finfrock from Ohio State’s ROTC program rappelled from the arena rafters to deliver the game puck and Private First Class Taren Davis of the Ohio National Guard dropped the ceremonial puck. Marine veteran and current Ohio State student Zach Cooper was the Buckeyes’ honorary captain and addressed the team Thursday. Video of his talk is available HERE. The Buckeyes wore camouflage jerseys, with the names of the military branches on the nameplates. The jerseys are being auctioned, with the money raised going to Defending the Blue Line. In the game between the Buckeyes and Mavericks, UNO led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the second. Ohio State cut the lead to 2-1 at 6:32 of the third but the Mavericks scored on the power play less than three minutes later to regain the two-goal advantage and sealed the win with an empty net goal. The Mavericks won the special teams battle, going 2-for-4 on the power play and stopping Ohio State on five power play chances.
Omaha scored the lone goal of the first period at 15:05, when Justin Parizek scored on a one-timer of a pass from Tyler Vessel. Shots were 11-5 in favor of Ohio State in the period. The Mavericks had one power play chance, with Ohio State 0-for-2.
UNO added to the lead at 18:15 of the second when Brian Cooper’s shot from the point got through a screen with the Mavericks on the power play. The goal came just two minutes after a UNO goal was disallowed because it was knocked in with a hand. UNO had nine shots in the period, with Ohio State getting eight on net. UNO converted one of its two chances with the man advantage and held Ohio State scoreless on one chance.
At 6:32 of the third period, Buckeye senior Matt Johnson knocked in the rebound of a shot by freshman Luke Stork out of midair, making it a one-goal game. It was Johnson’s second goal of the season and the first collegiate assist for Stork. Senior Justin DaSilva had the second assist on the goal. Just two minutes later Ohio State went on the penalty kill and Omaha converted, as Avery Peterson scored at 9:04 to give UNO a two-goal advantage. Ohio State pulled its goalie for an extra attacker with a little more than three minutes remaining, and generated chances, including a shot that went off the pipe, but UNO sealed the win at 18:11 when Ian Brady scored on a long shot from the Omaha zone. Ohio State outshot UNO, 7-5, in the period. UNO had one power play chance in the period and Ohio State was 0-for-2.
For the game, Ohio State outshot Omaha, 26-19, a Buckeye opponent season low. Buckeye sophomore Matt Tomkins made 15 saves in 58:32 and UNO goalie Ryan Massa had 25 saves in 59:53.
Ohio State was scoreless on the power play for the third game in the row, going 0-for-5. UNO converted 2-of-4 chances.
