COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team fell to No. 19 Omaha, 4-3, Saturday in Value City Arena. The win gave the Mavericks (6-2-1, 2-0-0 NCHC), who scored the game’s final three goals to come back from a two-goal deficit, a sweep of the series with the Buckeyes (2-5-1, 0-0-0 B1G).
Next up, Ohio State will face Bowling Green in a home-and-home series. The teams will meet at 8:07 p.m. Friday in Bowling Green and at 7 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena in Columbus. Ohio State will then open Big Ten play with a home series against Michigan State Nov. 20-21.
For the second night, the Buckeyes wore camouflage jerseys, with the names of the military branches on the nameplates. The jerseys are being auctioned, with the money raised going to Defending the Blue Line. The auction can be accessed HERE.
Saturday in Value City Arena, the teams scored three goals in less than two minutes in the first period, as Buckeyes Tanner Fritz and Chad Niddery had goals at 4:05 and 6:02 sandwiched around a score at 5:02 from UNO’s Avery Peterson. Darik Angeli then put the Buckeyes up by two (3-1) at 16:11, but Peterson answered again quickly for UNO to cut the Buckeye lead to one (3-2) after the first period. UNO scored the only goal of the second to tie the game and then took the lead early in the third, skating to the 4-3 road win.
The teams combined for five first-period goals, with Ohio State ahead 3-2 after the first 20 minutes. Fritz opened the scoring at 4:05, taking a pass from sophomore Nick Schilkey and scoring from the faceoff circle. Freshman Christian Lampasso had the second assist to pick up his first collegiate point. Just 57 seconds later the Mavs tied the game on a goal by Peterson, but senior Niddery worked to get to the front of the net and scored on a backhand for a 2-1 Buckeye lead 60 seconds later (6:02). At 16:11 Angeli gave the Buckeyes a two-goal cushion, getting to a loose puck in front with the goalie out of position after a save on Schilkey. Fritz had the second assist on the goal, his team-best sixth helper of the year. Less than two minutes later Peterson scored his second of the game, converting a breakaway at 17:57 after a blocked shot in the UNO zone by Brian O’Rourke, to make it a one-goal game heading into intermission. Ohio State was outshot, 9-8, in the period. Each team had two power play chances.
Omaha’s David Pope scored the only goal of the second period, tallying from just outside the crease at 11:07 to tie the game at three. Ohio State outshot Omaha, 11-8, in the period. Each team had one power play in the stanza and the teams had two minutes of 4-on-4 play.
Just 1:53 into the third period Justin Parizek was able to score off a loose puck in front, giving the Mavericks their first lead of the game (4-3). The Buckeyes skated with the net empty for the final 1:39, and had a two-man advantage (6-on-4) for the last 1:21 after a holding call on Omaha, but were unable to get the equalizer. Shots were 13-11 in favor of Omaha in the period and the Buckeyes had the lone power play.
Each team had 30 shots in the contest. Buckeye sophomore Christian Frey made 26 saves in 58:21, while Omaha’s Kirk Thompson made 27 stops.
The Buckeyes converted 1-of-4 power play chances, their first power play goal in four games. Ohio State held UNO scoreless on three power play opportunities.
Fritz now leads the Buckeyes with six assists and nine points this season and is second with three goals. The senior captain has 92 points in 114 career games.
