Ohio State Downs Notre Dame, 5-1, in Shillelagh Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With points from 10 players, including two goals by Tanner Fritz and three assists from Nick Schilkey, the Ohio State men’s hockey team skated to a 5-1 win at Notre Dame Saturday in the third place game of the Shillelagh Tournament. The Irish hosted the tournament at the Compton Family Ice Arena in Notre Dame, Ind. Western Michigan won the title with an 8-2 victory over Union in the early game Saturday.
Ohio State will close the first half of its schedule with a 7 p.m. game at Michigan Friday in Ann Arbor. The game will be televised by BTN.
Ohio State (5-8-1, 1-1-0 B1G) scored the first two goals of the game and led the Irish (6-8-2, 2-2-2 HE) 2-1 after the opening period. The Buckeyes added a power play goal in the second period for a 3-1 advantage and then had goals at 1:28 and 10:49 of the third for the 5-1 final. Fritz had his second multiple-goal game of the year while Schilkey, who assisted on the last three goals of the game, had a career high three helpers and matched his personal best for points in a game. Freshman Victor Bjorkung and junior transfer Blake Doerring both scored their first goals for the Scarlet and Gray, senior Darik Angeli had two points with a goal and an assist and junior Anthony Greco had two helpers. Sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 29 saves in the win.
Ohio State was ahead 2-1 after the first 20 minutes. Doerring, skating as a forward, put in the rebound of attempts by freshmen linemates Kevin Miller and Nicholas Jones at 7:05 to open the scoring. At 12:24 Fritz took a drop pass from Greco and scored on a wrist shot past ND goalie Cal Peterson. Junior Craig Dalrymple had the second assist on the goal. At 19:04 the Irish got on the board when Steven Fogarty tallied on a rebound. Each team had 10 shots in the period and the Irish had the only power play of the stanza.
Fritz scored the only goal of the second period at 5:56, as Schilkey found him at the far post with the Buckeyes on the power play. Fritz leads the Buckeyes with 11 points this season and is second with five goals. Greco had the second assist on the goal and is tied for second with eight points (6g, 2a) on the year. The Irish outshot the Buckeyes, 9-6, in the period and Ohio State converted the lone power play chance.
The Buckeyes added two third period goals en route to the win. At 1:28 Bjorkung’s shot from the point went off the Notre Dame goalie’s glove and in for his first collegiate point. Schilkey and Angeli assisted on the goal. At 10:49 Angeli scored from a sharp angle on a loose puck after a shot by senior classmate Nick Oddo, with Schilkey picking up the second assist. Schilkey is tied for second on the team with eight points, including six assists. Ohio State outshot the Irish, 12-11, in the period. The Buckeyes, who had one power play in the period, held Notre Dame scoreless on two chances, including a full five-minute major.
For the game, Ohio State was outshot, 30-28. Frey played all 60 minutes and had 29 saves for the Buckeyes. Notre Dame’s Peterson had 23 saves in all 60 minutes. Ohio State blocked 19 shots as a team, led by junior defenseman Craig Dalrymple with five and Oddo and Angeli with three each.
The Buckeyes converted 1-of-2 power play chances, notching their third game in a row with a power play goal. The penalty kill was perfect for a third game in a row, and for the 10th time this season, holding Notre Dame scoreless on three chances.
