COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Michigan, 8-3, Friday in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The game was the Buckeyes’ (5-9-1, 1-2-0-0 B1G) final contest before their December break. The squad will return to action with two games at Mercyhurst Jan. 2-3, 2015 in Erie, Pa. In the Big Ten matchup, Michigan (8-6-1, 2-1-0-0 B1G) scored in the last 12 seconds of the first period to take a 2-1 lead into intermission and outscored the Buckeyes 5-1 in the second en route to the win.
Ohio State senior Matt Johnson opened the scoring at the 10:04 mark of the first period, scoring from a sharp angle, assisted by classmate Chad Niddery and freshman Luke Stork. The Wolverines tied the game at 12:49 on a Zach Hyman score. With just 11.4 seconds left in the period, Zach Werenski scored after a Wolverine faceoff win in the Buckeye zone, putting Michigan ahead 2-1 after the first 20 minutes. Shots were 9-5 in favor of Michigan in the period.
The Wolverines outscored the Buckeyes 5-1 in the second period, including four power play goals. At 4:17 Travis Lynch scored, followed by a goal from Andrew Copp on the power play at 6:39. Shortly after, Buckeye senior Darik Angeli and sophomore Nick Schilkey got behind the UM defense, with Angeli setting up Schilkey for his third goal of the year. Senior Nick Oddo had the second assist on the goal, which came at 7:45. At 11:44, Michigan’s Copp netted his second power play tally of the period, making it a 5-2 UM lead. The Wolverines then went on a five-minute major power play and converted twice, with Alex Kile scoring at 14:39 (just 19 seconds after the power play began) and 16:14. Michigan outshot Ohio State, 11-9, in the stanza.
Each team scored once in the third, with the Wolverines’ Tony Calderone tallying at 1:11. Buckeye junior Anthony Greco netted his team-best seventh of the year at 5:04. Freshman Janik Moser picked up an assist for his first collegiate point, passing from the neutral zone to Greco on the rush. Freshman Matthew Weis had the second assist, his team-best seventh helper this season. In the period, Ohio State outshot Michigan, 12-6.
Each team put 26 shots on goal. Buckeye sophomore Christian Frey started and played the first 26:39, giving up four goals and making 10 saves to take the loss. Sophomore Matt Tomkins played 14:32 and had three saves, allowing four goals. Sophomore Logan Davis was between the pipes for the final 18:49 and stopped all five shots he faced. Ohio State blocked 22 shots in the game, led by Schilkey with five.
Michigan won the special teams battle, converting 4-of-5 power play chances and holding Ohio State scoreless on six opportunities.
