Ohio State Falls to Western Michigan, 6-2, in Shillelagh Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the opening day of the Shillelagh Tournament hosted by Notre Dame, the Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Western Michigan, 6-2. The Buckeyes (4-8-1, 1-1-0-0 B1G) will face the loser of the matchup between Union and Notre Dame Saturday in the consolation game, with the Broncos competing for the tournament championship. Saturday, Union and OSU/WMU will play at 4:05 p.m., followed by a game between the Irish and OSU/WMU at 7:35 p.m. All games are held at the Compton Family Ice Arena in Notre Dame, Ind.
The Broncos led 2-0 after the first period. Ohio State drew within one early in the second, but WMU answered less than a minute later to put the Bronco lead back at two. The Buckeyes made it a one-goal game (3-2) at 10:59 of the second and neither team scored the rest of the period. With two goals in 1:05 in the first eight minutes of the third period, the Broncos extended their advantage to three (5-2) and Ohio State could get no closer. Ohio State pulled its goalie for the extra attacker with more than five minutes left in the third, but WMU sealed the win with an empty net goal.
In the opening period, Bronco J.T. Osborn opened the scoring at 3:22 and Frederik Tiffels scored his first of three goals on the day at 16:59. Ohio State put 11 shots on net in the period, with Western Michigan getting 10 through. Each team was unsuccessful on two power play chances in the period.
At 2:35 of the second period, Ohio State junior Anthony Greco stole the puck and scored from the slot with the Buckeyes on the power play, making it a one-goal game (2-1). The tally was Greco’s team-best sixth of the season. Just 54 seconds later, Michael Rebry answered for the Broncos for a 3-1 lead. At 10:59 of the stanza, Buckeye senior Chad Niddery completed a 2-on-1 with freshman Christian Lampasso to again make it a one-goal game (3-2). Senior Matt Johnson had the second assist on the goal, Niddery’s second tally of the season. The Buckeyes were outshot, 14-9, in the period. Ohio State converted the only power play opportunity of the stanza.
The Broncos scored twice in a 1:05 stretch in the first half of the third period to grab a three-goal lead (5-2). Kenney Morrison scored the first goal at 6:04, with Tiffels tallying at 7:09. Ohio State pulled goalie Matt Tomkins for the extra attacker with more than five minutes remaining, but Tiffels completed his hat trick with an empty net goal at 14:23 sealed the win. The Broncos outshot the Buckeyes, 12-2, in the period and Ohio State had the only power play chance.
For the game, Ohio State was outshot, 36-22. Tomkins had 30 saves for the Buckeyes in 59:29, allowing five goals. Lukas Hafner made 20 saves in all 60 minutes for the Broncos.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on the power play for the second game in the row. The squad was 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Ohio State had two penalties for the second time in the last three games and the third time in the last five outings.
